Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I have two computers, one is a desk pc and a laptop. The desk pc is wired to the Netgear wndr3300 and the laptop is wireless. The laptop is running XP and the desk pc is running 2000. It started with updating my AVG anti-virus. It couldn't update, came back with "update server failed", "invalid binary file" or "file corruted". I can't download anything at all. I get the messages above pluse ".exe file missing". This happening to both computers. The only thing these two have incommon is the router and the internet. How do I fix this? I am not a tech, so please put the answer in novice speak. Thanks.

What does the LAN do on the modem

There are two halves to a router. The internet (WAN) side a local network (LAN) side.

The term WAN means Wide Area Network and generally refers to the internet.

The term LAN means Local Area Network. That would be for the computers that are in your office or home.

The LAN connects your computer to your printers or to other computers.

I hope that answers your question!

How do i turn off mac filtering on my netgear wndr3300 rangemax dual band router through my computer/

MAC address filtering is configured in the wireless settings.
Connect a LAN cable from the Netgear to the LAN port on yourcomputer, open a browser and enter the Netgear configuration URL -
http://192.168.0.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = password You can now change the default admin password and configurethe wireless settings.
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2encryption.
Apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

Netgear dualband wndr3300 - Why can I only connect to one band

Dual band means it is working on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequency. If your computer can connect on both frequency that only means that the wireless adapter in your computer is also dual band.
