Question about Dell E156FP 15" LCD Monitor

1 Answer

I have a dell E156FPc LCD Monitor that won't power on. Not even an LED lights up. I've tried a known "good" power supply but still nothing. I opened it up and all of the caps appear to be good. I'm no pro but I've repaired a few of these. This one I'm stuck on, can anyone offer a suggestion?

The board, with the power buttons is most likly toast. If it's not the power supply, than it's either the board or completly shorted out. Good luck.

I assume that you already try this monitor on another PC to verify that the problem is in the monitor, in this case you need to open it up and inspect the fuse, transitors, solder connections on the power/inverter board, see failed Dell monitors here for guide: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further.

Below you will find my recommendations for troubleshooting this issue:

1. Reseat the power cord and verify a good power source.

To reseat the power cord, follow the steps below:

1.1 Power down the system.
1.2 Unplug the power cord.
1.3 Wait approximately one minute.
1.4 Reseat the power cord.
1.5 Verify that the power cord is plugged directly into a known good power outlet.

2. Verify that the monitor is receiving power from a known good outlet and bypass any power strips.

To test the power outlet, perform the following steps:

2.1 Unplug the monitor power cable from the power outlet.
2.2 Plug in a different device, and verify that the device is operational.
2.3 If there is no power try another outlet. Remove any power strips and try plugging directly into the main power outlet.

3. Verify the monitor is powered on and the power button is engaged.

Ensure that the monitor is powered on and that the power button is fully engaged. To do so, check the power LED on the front of the monitor; it should be lit.

NOTE: There are two types of power switches:
A mechanical switch characterized by a long travel. You have to push it further and you will hear an audible click.
An electrical switch that has a short travel and almost no click.

A lit monitor LED can be any of the following:

* Green
* Blinking green
* Yellow
* Blinking yellow
* A combination, such as alternating green and yellow

Any of these states indicate the monitor is receiving power and that you should proceed.

4. Swap power cables.

To try a known good power cable on the monitor, follow the instructions below:

4.1 Turn off a working monitor.
4.2 Unplug the cable from the back of the working monitor, and unplug the cable from the wall.
4.3 Unplug the cable from the monitor in question.
4.4 Plug in the cable that came from the working monitor.

5. Run the monitor self test.

To run the monitor self test, perform the following steps:

5.1 Power off both the computer and the monitor.
5.2 Unplug the video cable from the computer or video card.
5.3 Reseat the power cord to the monitor, ensuring it is plugged into a known-good outlet.
5.4 Power on the monitor.

NOTE: The monitor self test will move around on some monitor models. If the monitor self test moves, allow it to move to the affected areas of the monitor to check for the problem described.

If the Self test failed, it's possible that the monitor is faulty. Contact dell to check if it's still under warranty so they can replace it.

E173 Monitor has no picture, led powers up, turns off, cycles

sawyrick, This sounds like the switch mode power supply has failed, or it has detected a problem with the inverter board that lights-up the Cold Cathode Fluorescent tubes on rear side of lcd panel. You did not state any history in your complaint!! You didn't even tell how old it is. These things are important! If the fuse inside on the switch-mode-power-supply board were to go "open-circuit" then you wouldn't get any front panel light. In any case, since I don't know your level of electronic repair capability, (level zero because you don't own any test equiptment or soldering iron, solder, solder wick) you have few if any options open to you. Here are 2. 1. Call Dell, ask about monitor swapout program? If any!! You send them your's + $60-$90. They send you Refurbished same model in return. 2. Find out all you can about lcd monitors and their failing SMPS boards and or INVERTER circuit boards CCF tube lighting systems. YOUTUBE has some videos on the subject because of the high rate of failures due to Bad/failing electrolytic filter capacitors and or real crappy soldering of components to the SMPS board and or INVERTER boards. For a look-see only visit lcd-monitor-repair.com or www. badcaps.net or lcdrepair .us just for your own information. Hope thisinfo helps you out. I would certainly like to know what avenue of repair that you select to go with. In any case, I wish you good luck. I'm louie12fix on fixya or lmistyrel@ aol.com BYE for now.

No Power LED and Nothing on the screen

Check your power supply to your screen cause it should at least show a amber light at the screen to show that there is power but no proper signal from the computer.

So below are step to check the power supply to your monitor. Assuming if you use a different monitor on your pc it works

1. Check your fuse both internal and external
2. check if power is receipted by the LCD

You either have a bad inverter board in the unit or a lamp problem, also there are known issues with these units having bad capicitors in them. It is more fesable to replace it then repair it sorry :-(
