The speaker is manufactured by PUI, but it is a custom OEM job for Escort. So you can't get it from any distributor or from PUI. In the late summer of 2007 Escort started installing a new "high temp" speaker. This new speaker looks just like the original speaker, but it is designed to be able to handle very high temperatures without blowing. If your 9500i is still in warranty, Escort will replace the speaker with the new "high temp" speaker, test and calibrate your 9500i, and install whatever their latest firmware is. If your 9500i is out-of-warranty, then you should call them and see if they will send you a replacement "high temp" speaker for a small charge. The speaker is easy to replace. A good while back I posted on radardetector.net detailed instructions on how to replace a 9500i speaker. It takes all of 10 minutes to do.

Does the passport 9500ix unit have a fuse in the detector or the plug. I was unable to locate the typical fuse that's usually in the plug.

  • There is no traditional fuse inside your radar. The only one that is protecting the wire is in the plug that goes into your cigarette lighter / ACC outlet. If your fuse blew and you replaced it with another 2 Amp or 3 Amp fuse and are getting no response I would start with the fuse that provides the power fuse to the outlet you were using when it blew. But no quick blow style fuse inside your radar.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

All the features on my 9500i work except the video display. I do not have the "dark mode"" enabled. Any thoughts on how to repair this problem? Thank you!

This likely is caused by a cold solder joint on the back side of the alphanumeric LED display. Escort will have to repair this for you.

It doesn't sound

Your 9500i likely has a blown speaker. Contact Escort about sending in your RD to have its speaker replaced.

Smart cord just flashes

Try the following. First, make sure if possible that the 9500i is powered off when you plug it into power. Then hold down the buttons (I forget which ones) needed to put it into USB mode and only release these buttons once "USB" is displayed after plugging it in again. Hopefully you will be able to get your 9500i to display "USB" again. If you can get it to display "USB", only then plug in its USB cable into your computer. Then run Detector Tools and see if you can re-flash the firmware.

No audio output

Well besides the obvious of voice off/on the speaker could be blown. I have one of these units but have not cracked it open. My speaker has blown twice on my passport 9500i and I just replaced it myself. It's out of warrantee and Escort wouldn't send me a speaker, so I got one from radio shack and that worked for a while, then blew. I used a laptop internal speaker now and that works great ! BTW if the speaker on this unit is soldered to the board good luck, like I said I haven't cracked my ew3100 open yet.

''I have a xrs 9730 radar detector and the speaker quit working''

Most likely the speaker simply blew due to excessive heat. This is a fairly common problem with all makes and models of radar detectors. Contact Cobra. They should either be able to send you a replacement speaker which you can install yourself, or they should issue you a RMA so that you can send in your Cobra for service.
