My furnace does not ignite, blower turns on but no flame

    Hay matref1990 -- Somewhere on your furnace there is a sticker (usually on the bottom blower door) It will tell you what a 5 code is. When you find it you will know what the furnace is sensing the problem. You might want to check that and then rewrite another question here.

Sounds like it it isn't the igniter but probably the pressure switch. You can only tell by the clicking noises as they system goes through it's safty checks prior to the call to the igniter.

    Goes thru start up cycle and burner starts up but only stays on a short time and blower fan never turns off

Tractorman44 thanks but misunderdstood husband! When thermostat turned up the fan comes on before flames ignites. Plenum heats and furnace runs.


If the fan comes on first, then the flame ignites, it USUALLY indicates there is a problem in the ignition process of the furnace. Most new manufacturers have the adjustable 'time off' sequence for the blower, and most initiate a call for the blower to run within a pre-determined amount of time AFTER a call for heat has been established. ALSO, and this is where I think the problem is, the ignition sequence starts immediately upon a call for heat. If there is a heat ignition failure, it will attempt a restart. USUALLY, they allow 5 restarts within a certain timeframe then the circuit board locks out the heat sequence until it is reset by cycling the power or cycling the thermostat manually.

What I think is happening with yours it that your ignition sequence is experiencing a 'flame failure' upon a call for heat....then it re-establishes the ignition sequence, which takes another 30 to 45 seconds. During this time, the blower automatically starts (because the allotted time has expired) and blows COLD air because of the initial flame failure. In the meantime the ignition sequence establishes a flame on the second or possibly the third try and then you feel the warm air.

IF this is the case, ultimately what will happen is that the furnace will continue to experience 'flame failure' and eventually fail to the point of 'flame failure lockout' and you will have no heat, but the fan could possibly run continuously.

At any rate, without being able to be there to troubleshoot and test components physically, this is just a calculated and reasonably reasonable guess. What it is telling you is that you probably need to contact a reputable, reliable service organization to give your furnace a good going over before it lets you down on a good cooooold night!!!

I hope this helps you understand the basics of what happens within the system and bear in mind, this is a 'generic' sequence and possibly NOT the exact sequence of your particular furnace.

Read one LED flash that stays on continuously to mean your furnace has no signal coming from the thermostat and will not operate. Turn the power off and check the thermostat for improper settings or connections.

Interpret one LED flash that blinks on and off to mean your furnace has locked out because it could not ignite after three tries, and must be reset. Interrupt power to your furnace for 20 seconds or lower the thermostat so your furnace does not try to heat, then reset the thermostat to the previous setting. After one hour of lockout, your furnace will automatically reset itself and try to operate as usual.

Decipher two LED flashes to mean the draft blower is not working, or your furnace has a short in the pressure switch circuit. Turn off the furnace power and repair a short or replace the pressure switch.


Read three LED flashes to mean your furnace has an open pressure switch circuit or it has an induced draft blower operating. Check the pressure switch hose of your furnace for blocks or an improper connection. Also, look for blockages in the flue, and tighten any loose wiring.

Translate four LED flashes to mean your furnace has a primary limit circuit open, possibly from loose wiring or blocked filters. Check and clean filters, tighten wiring and check the flue for blockages.

Interpret five LED flashes to mean your Goodman furnace senses a flame without a call for heat. This could be from a gas valve closing slowly or a burner flame lingering.



Read seven LED flashes as a warning of a low flame sense microamp signal. This could happen with a coated flame sensor or a lazy flame from poor gas pressure. Turn off the power and adjust the gas pressure according to the information on the rating plate.



See eight LED flashes as meaning an igniter circuit problem due to a bad igniter or an igniter connected improperly. Replace the bad igniter or check the ground wiring, making necessary corrections.



Decipher nine LED flashes to mean the high-stage pressure switch circuit will not close during a high-stage-induced draft blower operation. Your furnace may have a pinched or blocked pressure switch hose, a blocked flue or loose wiring.

Read continuous flashing on the LED to mean your furnace has a reversed polarity of 115 volts. Turn off the power and correct the wiring polarity after reviewing the wiring diagram.

Looking for sequence of operation for a lennox mid efficient furnace


When there is a Call for heat, the control delays ignition until combustion air

Blower operation has been proved and pre-purge period

Has elapsed. It then opens the gas valve and generates a

Spark to ignite the burners. Trial for ignition lasts for 7 seconds.

At the same time, the control begins monitoring the

Flame sensor. If the flame current is too weak (less than 1

Micro amp) or if the burners do not ignite (within the 7 second

Ignition trial), the control will shut off spark and the combustion

Air blower and de-energize the gas valve. Flame

Current should be between 1 and 5 micro amps to keep the

Gas valve open.

The control will attempt to ignite the burners up to two more

Times. Each time the control restarts the ignition sequence,

It begins with a 45 second pre-purge. If flame is not sensed

After the third trial, the control locks out. Lockout means that

The control shuts off the gas valve, spark and combustion air

Blower for 60 minutes. At the end of 60 minutes the control

Completely resets and will attempt ignition up to three times.

The control can be manually reset before the end of 60 minutes

By momentarily turning off power to the unit.

I have a RUUD Silhouette II and every once in a while the house gets cold and I check my furnace and the Status Light blinks-pauses-blinks-pauses ect. It is only flashes once so it tells me ''One Hour Time...


You will need to reset the furnace and have it run thru a cycle (or try). After three attempts, it will blink another error code that may tell you more.

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

I have a 9 year old Weatherking Acclaim II that has ceased to produce heat. The blower is still functioning. I have shut the system down and restarted to no avail. Any thoughts?

Weak flame in intertherm furnace


Ok, so we can rule out the ignitor. (standing pilot systems can develop problems that will cause such symptoms.)

Check the gas pressure, make sure you are getting 11 to 14 PSI.

You need that after the regulator all the way to the manifold.

Also check for cracks in the heat exchanger, causing the wind from the blower to distort the flame pattern enough to cause improper contact with the flame sensor.

Make sure the burners and flame channels are clean of rust, and dibri build up, allowing the flame to properly contact the sensors.

  1. The sensor that tells the furnace whether the gas is lit has got build-up on it and is giving the furnace bad information.
  2. The flame sensor is often a single wire or rod that sticks up in the center of the flame.
  3. You can shut off the furnace and the gas and clean the sensor with some sandpaper.
If that still doesn't work, the sensor may need to be replaced.

Rheem gas furnace pilot lights, but no burners or fan


If the burners do not fully ignite, the sensor will shut the furnace down. The lack of sufficient burner flame is a gas valve or gas pressure problem within the valve.
Replacing the gas valve with the original one may get you going. I surely suggest a professional service company for safety reasons and a thorough inspection. A 20 year old furnace is past it's normal life span.

Carrier Weathermaker gas 8000 will not ignite


Your hot surface igniter may be bad. It may be cracked which would prevent it from starting the burner flame.

Weatherking furnace


Easy to fix. Looking inside the burner box, you should see a rod that extend into the flame. Sand this rod with sand paper and try to start the furnace again. if this does not work, replace this part.
