This problem is commonly caused by build up of rust or sediment in your water inlet valve (also known as a "fill valve" or "mixing valve"). Especially, if you live in an area that has hard water, or if you use well water. In some cases, the solenoid that controls either the hot or cold water can also go bad. The valve is located where the fill hoses attach to the washer. The following link explains how to access and repair:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r600647-replacing_water_inlet_valve_kenmore

You can attempt to clean the fill valve sediment screens if you like by removing the valve from the washer and soaking it in a 50/50 solution of distilled white vinegar. Vinegar is great for dissolving scale and deposits. Just make sure you do not submerge the solenoids or terminals. Soak for about 30 minutes, then flush with clean water. In addition, clean the terminals to make sure they are not corroded. Sometimes this is all it takes to get the valve working again.

If cleaning does not work, you may have to purchase a new one. Replacements can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, appliancepartspros.com, repairclinic.com or pcappliancerepair.com. I have used these sites over the years and have had great service with all of them. All offer competitive pricing so shop around for the best price.

I do not know what your model number is, but generally the Kenmore and Whirlpool top loaders are all very similar in build and utilize many of the same parts between models. If you search by model number, the valve should be listed under the "Rear Panel" heading.

If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

Cold water trickles into the tub while it is being filled up

The hot and cold water supply hoses that connect the washer from the water supply faucets on the wall to the water connections on the back of the clothes washer usually have filter / sediment screens within there connection fittings at the end of the hoses, these will collect dirt, sand, calcium deposits, etc.,when they trap enough of these materials they will plug up and restrict the flow of water into the clothes washer. Turn off the water faucets at the wall, and you should do this for both hot and cold hoses, disconnect the hoses from the washer and the water faucets, look into the hose ends and pull out the screens and clean them out by running water and what ever you can use to clean them completely!!!!!
Now look inside the water connections on the back of the clothes washer, where you screw the hoses on the washer, and check to see if there are filter screens in there, if there is, remove them and clean out completely also, then reverse the removal process and reconnect the hoses, makeing sure to connect the hot and cold hoses to the right connection on the back of the clothes washer!!
Try filling the washer with water to see if you have corrected the problem.
Make sure hot and cold hoses are correct on the back of the washer!!!!
GOOD LUCK !!!!!!

I can't get the cold water to fill the tub/rinse. the hot works.

Your problem is either a clogged COLD fill valve or a bad water fill valve. Turn the water off. Remove the COLD hose from the WASHER. Check the filter screen inside the valve for sediment. If you find sediment, remove the screen and clean it. Replace the screen and turn the water back on. If you do not find sediment on the screen, replace the water valve.

sounds like you have checked the water coming out of the cold water so the fill valve requires replacement

Kenmore 90 Series Washer : cold water fills at just a trickle:

your hot water goes through the water heater so contaminates settle in the heater. the cold does not, there is a screen inside the fill valve where the hose hooks to the valve on the machine. if this in not plugged then the fill valve will have to be replaced. because of the build up of contaminates..

Hot Water won't fill

I like to put the hose over in the tub and run some water just to eliminate plumbing problems from that point back. Then, I check the inside of the water valve where the hose connects which you have done. If all this is ok the only thing left is to replace the water valve. I have had some success taking the water valve apart and cleaning it out. About 2 out of 10 will start working but most require replacing.

Kenmore washing machine 80 series

check for kinks in the pipe or restrictions to the flow in the pipes before it gets to the washer, if all is ok then check the filter on the outside of the water connector on the machine for dirt

if you confirm all is clear and the flow of water is not the problem before the machine, replace the cold water solenoid
