TV was working fine. Then when we turned it off we were unable to turn it on with remote or manually. The screen is completely black as if it is not getting power. However the circuit is fine and all other items plugged into the surge protector are functioning normally. This set was purchased new and was manufactured in July 2002.

What brand is your universal remote? Best thing would be to go on the universal remote manufactures website and they should have a list of codes for models based on what model number your universal remote is. Then you can look up possible codes for your tv found in the users manual (which you can print from online) and it gives you like 5-7 codes that you try and will give you instructions on how to enter the code and save that code to your remote. I hope that helps.
I turned the TV off. I held in all of the (4) buttons on the front of the TV and turned the TV back on again....this seemed to free up the remote control access and I was able to work the TV normally. The four buttons were the channel and the volume controls.
I had the same problem with my remote...over time it slowly stopped working. (sorry for poor terminology) I noticed that one of the battery terminals was corroded and that the metal connecting the battery to the board was completely gone. I simply swapped this out with one from another remote and now its working fine. Seems the only issue is that the battery was not connected.
