Refer to the printer's User's Guide on how to connect your Lexmark X5470 to your telephone line for faxing. If the printer software is already installed on your computer, you can access the printer's User's Guide by going to the Start menu -> Programs -> Lexmark 5400 Series -> User's Guide (applicable to Windows OS). If not, you can download it from the Lexmark website for free using this link: Lexmark 5400 Series All-In-One User's Guide. Scroll to page 12 for the fax setup instructions. You'll need to reset the factory defaults. Download the User Guide (PDF) from here: http://www.lexmark.com/publications/pdfs/2007/4800/en.html (I'm assuming you have the something in the 4800 series of printers, though you posted your question in the 5400 series section)
Go to Start->All Programs->Lexmark 5400 Series and launch the Lexmark Fax Solutions.
Click on the Tools menu and select the Adjust Fax Settings option.
See if there is anything in the Dial prefix.
