When diagnosing a power issue, work from the source back to the machine. You tried a different cord, did you try a different wall socket? (Are you using a power strip?) Try using the cord that is attached to the machine to power the monitor. If this works then you know that the cord and socket are good. To continue working backward, the next component is not the motherboard, it is the power supply unit. (That the cord plugs into...) When you try to turn on your system, do ANY of the fans on your machine turn on? (There is a fan located in the PSU, and there are usually at least two fans in the machine...one on the CPU, and one case fan.) One time I began to take everything apart on my own machine, only to realize that my power supply had a "hard switch" on the back of it that was in the "off" position. -- (The mark was shaped like a circle and the other side was a dash, the dash means "on")
Anyway, if no fans come on when trying to start the system, the problem may be the power supply. To test the power supply is not too difficult, you will need a thin paperclip bent into a "U" shape. First, make sure that the power cord is NOT connected to the back. Second, disconnect the PSU from the motherboard and all the drives that it is connected to. Third, after letting the PSU sit unplugged for a little while, insert one end of the "U" shaped paperclip into the terminal with the green wire. The other end should go into the black wired terminal next to the green one that you just used. Finally, plug the power cord into the socket and the wall...the fan on the power supply should start spinning if the PSU is good. You could take it one step further and use a multimeter to test the ends of the wired for appropriate voltage.
****Note: Never take the case off of the power supply unless you are a qualified technician...inside the PSU there are very large capacitors that can hurt you. Working with the ends of the wires however is safe.
This seems like a long confusing response, so if you have a question, please ask.

My Dell Dimension 4600 computer will not turn on when I hit the On button, Instead it show a small greenish light near the On button under a Power symbol. I have checked all the cables and cords and...

Open up the side panel of the PC case, remove the BIOS battery for about a minute. Then reinstall it in the correct orientation. This will clear the BIOS to default.
You would have the best possible chance of success.
Try use another Power Supply, and try using onboard graphics and Graphics card to test if it is the problem.
If it works after resetting the BIOS the enter the BIOS by hitting del key, check the manual, at statup, and enter the correct date and time.
The day it stoped working, was it fairly warm? PC could have overheated and fried the Northbridge, thats the chip under the heatsink below your CPU cooler!!!
In that case you would have to purchase a new Mainboard!
Please tell me if this sovles your problem.
Please take the time as I have to rate this solution.
Thanks.

My monitor has gone to Power Save Mode

Hello,
If your monitor is going in Power save mode it can be cause by following reasons.
>Check the data cable going from monitor to your Dell Dimension 4600 Tower is connected properly. The connector will be blue or white in colour.
>If the Dell Dimension 4600 Tower is powering on.

If still in power save mode then try to shutdown Tower and monitor, disconnect power cable from tower and monitor.Hold the power button on tower for 15 seconds. Then again try to connect monitor and check,if still nogo, and if tower has no lights then issue with motherboard or video card or power supply. If possible try connect spare known good monitor.

Thankyou

How to soft boot a dell 4600

I used the reset button on my last one whenever ctrl/alt/del failed to soft boot
my computer.

Here is what Dell Chat tells me to do if ctrl/alt/del doesn't work:

Turn off the system from the power button. Remove the plug to the
power supply from the back off the system tower. Then hold the power
button on the tower down for 10 secs ( with the power cord removed).
Reconnect the power cord and then restart the system. This time do a
normal shutdown.
