There is a screw (tiny machine screw) that holds the entire DVD/CD assembly in place. Usually this screw is located by looking on the bottom of the laptop and has a little picture of a cd embossed in the plastic. Sometimes this screw is under a "lid" such as the cover for the RAM or HDD, depending on how your laptop is engineereed.

Find this screw, unscrew it, set it aside and them pull entire cd/dvd assembly from computer. Replace the cd/dvd drive into the slot you pulled it out firmly and quickly.

Turn on and test reading of CD/DVD.

If love is found, replace screw holding asembly, etc.
If no love, replace CD/DVD drive.

Other sources of love:

correct cd/dvd driver.
remove/replace cd/dvd driver
update cd/dvd driver

DVD/CD-ROM drive not working. Drivers were reinstalled and still not operational. Message received that there is a problem with the registry - how can this be fixed?

Find a "bootable" CD-R disk (Ubuntu Linux, Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows 7) and restart your computer, and tell it to "boot" from the disk inserted into the CD/DVD disk. If it reads from the CD/DVD, then the hardware is OK. If it cannot read the disk, then it's time to replace the "broken" CD/DVD device.

My HP Model w1097 does not read CD/DVD drive TSST corp cddvdw ts-h6532

Most likly the drive is bad. Try click start. click on my Computer. Right click the CD/DVD drive. Click properties. Click on Hardware. Does it say. This Device Is Working Properly? If not click on troubleshoot. At the HP web site you can get the latest driver for your CD/DVD drive. You can also insert a CD Go to my computer as stated earlier Right click CD/DVD drive to see what is on the disc. Or click play to see if it works. make sure you choose a default player. Hope this helps.

The drive doesn't read dvd

If it use to read try the following.
1. Reload the dvd driver. It is the set of instructions that lets the dvd drive work with your operating system. Sometimes you can google the name of your dvd drive and download the updated driver for your operating system.
ex. search for "Seagate Mx960A dvd driver download"
2. After you sucessfully download the new driver then reboot or restart your pc so it will reload the drivers.
Good luck
