There is a screw (tiny machine screw) that holds the entire DVD/CD assembly in place. Usually this screw is located by looking on the bottom of the laptop and has a little picture of a cd embossed in the plastic. Sometimes this screw is under a "lid" such as the cover for the RAM or HDD, depending on how your laptop is engineereed.

Find this screw, unscrew it, set it aside and them pull entire cd/dvd assembly from computer. Replace the cd/dvd drive into the slot you pulled it out firmly and quickly.

Turn on and test reading of CD/DVD.

If love is found, replace screw holding asembly, etc.
If no love, replace CD/DVD drive.

Other sources of love:

correct cd/dvd driver.
remove/replace cd/dvd driver
update cd/dvd driver

Hp pavilion dv2000, my cd/dvd rom is not working. the icon in my computer is not showing and when i put a cd or dvd its not reading. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, Assuming that the computer was functioning normally at one time when you had it and you did NOT buy it broken. It seems to be missing drivers that is required to startup the cd/dvd drive. Feel free to write me back because the more I know about it (such as what you've recently installed or done to the computer), the more I can help you. Go to start, systems, and then control panel. Go into devices and look for your cdrom drive. Do you see it there? If you do, does it have a yellow exclamation point by it? In either case, go to Hp's website and go into the support site. You will be asked to type in your exact model of computer. There will be a list of drivers that you can download. Download anything that has to do with the cdrom. Install this/these driver(s), and restart your computer. It's really hard to fix computers from two sentences especially over the net or phone. =) Problems could be from anywhere like software related or hardware. I used to do this stuff for a living and this was the most common problem that people had. Hope this helped.

Code 19- philips cdrw/cvd scb5265 ata device how do i fix it

Do you receive the following error message?
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. To fix this problem you can first try running a Troubleshooting Wizard. If that does not work, you should uninstall and then reinstall the hardware device. (Code 19)
Code 19 is a common error message, your computer sends because NERO, Roxio, and similar CD/DVD recording software and also and update for Windows VISTA (KB938194) is causing issues. It can create problems with your sound as well.
Even if you uninstall these it will not resolve the issue, because these programs leave the problem inside your registry.
What is happening to your computer?
Device Manager sees the drive, but you get the yellow exclamation mark and it indicates "Your registry might be corrupted. (Code 19)"
How most people try to fix this error – and you are probably doing the same - without any luck…

If you try to uninstall the device and the driver and read new hardware - no change.
You can try to update the driver and the wizard will say there is no better driver found for the hardware.
You can try to run the install CD (copied it to a flash card and ran it from a flash card reader since you can't run it on the DVD drive) - same problem will occur.
You can't do a repair install of Windows since it is on CD and it won't boot properly from the drive.
You can try to use an external DVD writer (HP dc5000) through the USB port and it will get the same code19 error.
Even if you try manually copy the drivers listed in driver details for the device - no luck

The drive doesn't read dvd

If it use to read try the following.
1. Reload the dvd driver. It is the set of instructions that lets the dvd drive work with your operating system. Sometimes you can google the name of your dvd drive and download the updated driver for your operating system.
ex. search for "Seagate Mx960A dvd driver download"
2. After you sucessfully download the new driver then reboot or restart your pc so it will reload the drivers.
Good luck

You just answered your question......."all drivers I assume present and ok" update your drivers..how old are the drivers for WIN98? how old are the drivers for XP. These are relevant to having the correct drivers for the correct operating system. The benefit for you is that you are running to operating systems seperately on two drives or am I mistaken. They need an update on the drivers for each OS and not a firmware update one is hardware the other is software? Your problem is the software.

Combo drive CD not reading, but DVD ok

it may have dual laser and one that reads cd's is faulty, but try uninstalling the dvd drive first then re installing it to see if it cures it, if not the drive will need replacing. Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete. Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers
