Question about Dell Dimension 5150 (DIM515MIN) PC Desktop

1 Answer

HP laptop pavilion tx 1000. when i hit the start button the computer starts up but the screen stays black. i have to shut it down again using the power button and just keep turning it on and off till it works. it sounds like it's starting noramally and running then the screen just stays black. when i do get it started up i can't get wireless because it can't locate my wireless card. my school computer station said the wireless card was gone. how do i permanently fix this without getting ripped off by geek squad orrrrrrrr how do i back up all my files to a computer desktop i have? (i have over 2,000 mp3, 1,500 pitcures, and countless important word documents so it would be difficult to back it up to cds or usb sticks)

You've stated two problems here so allow me to provide a solution for both. When it comes to your PC being black, there are a few troubleshooting things you can do. First off, have you tried using a different monitor or graphics card? If the PC is booting normally, that is, the POST beep code of one single beep is heard during boot, but the screen is black, this would normally point to video problem related to the monitor more than the video card itself.

The fact that it works after turning it on and of says that it might be a faulty connection to the PC or the monitor is simply going bad. Can you check the cables in the back of the monitor and computer to ensure they are plugged in firmly? Can you also use your other desktop PC to test this monitor to ensure it isn't monitor related? When you boot the PC and the monitor is black, is there something on the screen that says something similar to "No Signal Input"? If so, the monitor is working but not getting signal from the computer's VGA/DVI port. If you're using a video card and not on-board video, have you tried a different card?

To try and help answer your second question, yes, there are several ways to backup the HDD (hard disk drive) information. Probably the fastest but possibly a difficult task would be to buy an external HDD enclosure from a computer retail store. These enclosures are used to turn an internal HDD into an external HDD that can then connect to your PC using a USB cable. You would be able to pull the HDD from your Dell PC, plug it into one of these, and attach it to your other PC to pull the information required, off the HDD. The reason I say this could be difficult is that Dell's are notorious for burying their HDDs in areas that make them difficult to remove. On top of that, they may have complex release mechanisms that require you to make out hard-to-read etched images.

Another way to back up your files is to use both PCs on a home network and enable file and print sharing. You could then share the folders where your required information is stored and pull that information across the network to your other PC. This of course relies heavily on the faulty PC being able to boot the entire time and usable. Several GB (gigabytes) of information would take some time to copy over a network.

I suggest you buy an external harddrive with 500 Gigs, Go to for good prices. As far as the screen being black. You could have damaged the video card, the video card is integrated on the motherboard so it would be costly to replace the motherboard. If the wireless card is integrated also on the motherboard, same problem. Just a tip for future refrences, Laptops are used for quick access to info and files on the move, estimated time of use about 40 minutes. If you need to use a computer longer than that I recommend you use a desktop. I have seen many laptops go to waste because of long term use at a time. First thing that goes is usually the memory or video card. I hope this helps you.

But my laptop even don't work in safe mode. Blue screen appears and computer restarts again . What to do??

Try running the last known good configuration.

Follow the steps below,

Step 1: Shut down your PC completely.
Step 2: Turn on the Power button.
Step 3: As soon as you turn it on start hitting the F8 key on your keyboard until you get to a black screen called "Windows Advanced option". (If you don't get to that that screen but you end up reaching the blue screen than that means you have delayed in hitting the F8 key. start again from step 1.)
Step 4: As soon as you reach "Windows Advanced option" use your down arrow keys to choose an option called "Last know good configuration".
Step 5: Select that and HIT ENTER.

I have a HP Pavilion tx 1000. Blank screen, LED lights on.

Hello, seems like your sleep mode doesent work as it should. Try to download all windows updates and look for a fix on microsoft sites.
But the best solution is to inactive the sleep mode setting and use the Hibernate options(if you want a fast start) but I suggest that you turn off windows with shutdown, its the safest and best way to have your computer to work properly.

To inactivate sleep mode.
windows xp
go control panel and power options
Change the system standby to never.
also choose power schemes battery, and change the system standby to never.
also the harddisk to never.
This should solve your problem.

To activate Hibernate you need to click on hibernate tab and bock the square.
hibernate= saves all your work to harddrive to restart your computer where you left off.

sleep mode= saves your work to RAM memory=takes a little bit energy.

Unplug the unit, and remove the battery. This will shut the machine off completely. You do not need to let the battery die out. Then power the unit on again. If the issue is gone, consider turning off hibernation ( power options inside control panel)

The boot problem is probably relatet to the mainboard. But you can try reseating both RAM mods first. you can find them in the med sized compartment under the unit. if that doesent work the unit will need service.

For the WLAN problem you should try updating the BIOS first. you can find the latest BIOS on To find the correct modell search for the modellnumber. You can find it under the machine on a white lable. It will look something like this AA111BB#CCC. Then go to software and drivers downloads and chose operating system. you should find the latest BIOS somwhere on the page.

Recovery might also solve the WLAN issue. You can run a system recovery by pressing F11 at the HP logo during boot.

If the WLAN is still malfunctioning after this the unit will need service.

For backup the best solution would be using a SATA to USB adapter. Or you could try connecting the HDD directly inside your desktop if you have the cables and connectors needed.

The HDD is in the big compartment under the unit. You will need to remove the adapter on the HDD before you can access the SATA conectors. You should be able to pull it off without to much truble.
