Hooking up USB adaptor to internal hard drive on desktop

I'm trying to hook up a USB adaptor to an old (Compag series 5000) desktop to export the files on the hard drive to an external hard drive. Where do I plug in the USB adaptor inside the Compaq? I have the side panel off, but it all looks the same inside to me!

Clsoe the cover.
look outside of the box. look at the rear of the machine. there should be 2 USB slots. there is none in the front of the machine.
The USB driver may not be correct, since it is PIII machine. go to HP.com and download the USB driver for the machine.

My emachines e350 won`t turn on it alweys says No bootable device--Please restart systam and I do that and it says it again

Check that you have not left a non-bootable CD, diskette, or DVD in the drives of your PC, nor have any USB devices plugged in that the system might be looking to try to boot from.

If the above check is clear, then go into the BIOS settings and check that your internal hard disk drive is set as the first boot device or is ahead of any other disk drives you may have installed.

You cannot connect computers to each other by just using a standard USB cable - it doesn't work that way.

If you still cannot boot from your internal hard drive, then you should consider downloading a copy of Hiren's Boot CD (which is a CD .ISO image) then burn this to a real CD and try booting from that media - you may have to select the CD as a boot device in your BIOS or if you get a boot options menu.

If you can boot the Hiren's CD ok, then your internal hard disk may have failed - you can test this with the DOS Programs of the Hiren's CD by selecting Hard Disk tools then selecting HDAT2 which will try to find any installed hard disks then allow you to test these and repair problems if possible.

I have a presario 5000v and the power supply went out so I disconnect and removed the power supply and got another and I am having a hard time hooking the wiring back up I need help

What exactly are you having trouble with? I have a 5000 series Presario. Did you get an exact replacement power supply? Check the plugs to make sure.

There should be a mother board connector that will only go on one way (if yours is split, they will still only attach one way), the Molex and mini Molex are for the drives.

Post a comment if you still have trouble and I will pop my 5000 open and check for you.

Installing secondary hard drive in a gateway 5310s

in most new cases there are extra slots for extra hard drives, but as long as the ide or sata is hooked up it should work, and you can buy hardware and rig up something ,ive tested many hard drives without hooking up hardware,
the components on the hard drive should not touch other metal

I have 3in1 USB 2.0 to IDE & SATA Cable but nothing to show me how to use this kit

SATA 3.5" 2.5" IDE 3 IN 1 TO USB 2.0 CABLE ADAPTOR KIT

1 external connection kit
1 internal connection kit

The internal connect kit consists of 1 red USB connector cable
and 1 internal white male molex connector to SATA female power connector
( 1 yellow wire , 2 black wires , 1 red wire )

the external connect kit
consists of a 3 pin power adaptor (with a tiny plug to save space) feeding a power supply which powers either IDE thru a Molex connector or SATA through a supplied adaptor. Supplied also are data connectors to link the IDE or SATA hard drive with a USB port. Use this adaptor set to retrieve data from a hard drive when it is not mounted in a computer.

no you most likely just need to install the drivers for your nic card ... goto the device manager and look under other devices and see if a simple pci networking device is listed .. if it is remove it and run the new hardware wizard .. you will also need to identify the device either physically or by looking up your systems specs ... a useful command line utility is systeminfo in the command prompt ... if it is the driver get it downloaded from you manufacturers site and transferit by cd or stick drive and install it ....
