Thanks for all your information. Any insight on the sony cs-215j/w also would be appreciated. Thats the model I'm thinking about getting for my daughter

  • jskamm Mar 04, 2009

she's a college student, using it for web access, email, and school projects. I've priced this system and its only $799 at BB and it seems like a pretty decent price. Newegg is nearly $200 more.

No--not any more than any other manufacturer. There are always some problems in any run of manufacturing. I've worked on a lot of computers and none seem to be more trouble-prone than others now. If you're talking about the past, though, I could tell you about some computers that were positively bad! Now they seem to be better.

All motherboards are capable of failing. Sony's boards aren't any different.

My personal experience with Sony boards is that they're usually pretty stable compared to HP's DV series which are really problematic.

Sony's boards are usually a bit more expensive too depending on the model of course.

Let me know if you need any specifics or have any other questions.

Best of luck!

That's a pretty pricey laptop. How old is your daughter and what will she be using it for mostly?

A basic $400 compaq or dell laptop would be fine for her needs. It's your call but I'd consider the Sony a luxury.

I have an 830GM and am suspicious of a hard drive crash or a motherboard failure and was wondering how to diagnose?

try replacing or swapping the hard drive with another machine and see if it happens again and on which machine if both machine's crash both MB and HD could be bad, If your machine with different HD works fine then it most likely was the HD If not then the MB might be at fault

I have only 500 MB DDR II RAM attached to my k9vgm-v motherboard (Kingston, I think). I was going to buy a stick of 2GB DDR2 667 PC2-5300 HP/HYNIX 240pin RAM. I was wondering if this is compatible RAM as I...

Look at the label on your 512MB Ram stick. It should have the proper values noted. Then buy RAM that is the same except for MB. And be sure your computer can "see" the amount of RAM you want to install.
The RAM you plan to buy is for very new, powerful machines. It's a lot cheaper than the older RAM formats, but if your system is more than a year or two old, it will not work.

HP Pavilion dv9000z, How to create Motherboard Issue

Why would you do that. If its working perfectly okay, let it be. By the way, you don't need to speed it into crashing. If it's gonna crash, it would.

Computer keeps crashing. MB or HD? Soltek SL86MIP L

Manufacturers website is the best place for drivers. You could also have other compatability or hardware issues. Try the drivers first. If the computer is stable in safe mode, then I would say driver issues. If it is unstable in safe mode, then it is possibly something else.

Motherboard and ram..

DG965WH Board works well with 533 RAM, but is very finicky about 800, if you use 800, use only what is recomended.
I used kingston KVR533D2N4K2/2G with good luck on 4 motherboards.

You can try it, but watch for crashes and stabilty issues, if it has issues, remove it.

Gigabyte - Bad Capacitors!!

There was a widespread, industry-wide problem with bad capacitors in 2003/2004 timeframe. I know Dell has a good warranty replacement program (expires in 2008) for motherboards and power supplies that were built in that time frame. I have also ?heard? that several other manufactures have programs as well but the time on them is running out as well. I couldn?t find anything about a program specifically from Gigabyte but that?s not surprising. I had to literally pull it out of Dell and that only after two calls. I would definitely not try any home repairs till after calling the tech support site to see if they have an active program and if you qualify. As far as self-repairs to your motherboard go, it can be done if you have good skills and experience working on commercial electronics plus the equipment to match. If you go that route I strongly recommend you have a reliable backup of all your data just in case your repair does more harm than good. Also be aware that a bad repair job could result in damaging other components such as CPU, memory, disks and other peripherals. You should balance that against the fact that new motherboards range in price from $40 on up. Good luck.
