I would geuss it is the heater which fixes the ink that has gone .
If it has you might be able to make transfers.
Print a picture, place it face down on an old tshirt and iron it. It should print (reversed).
If it works the ink should be OK
Don't know how to fix the printer.

Empty cartridge maybe?
Otherwise it's simple: selt-test page(by printer button) printed ok - it's outer problem. Self-page is blank - it's inner problem. And so on... use Golden Section method

The image drum is not getting the correct signal at the correct time. It is time to retire the 4L and replace it with a newer, faster LaserJet. You'll be glad you did.

Refill ink.

First understand, that your Laserjet uses toner, not ink. Usually, the best answer is to purchase a replacement toner cartridge. I buy from the aftermarket, as the HP brand can be expensive. I think this is your best solution.

HP laserjet 4L parallel to usb vista Jumbled font on test page

You mentioned parallel usb. The HP4L only has parallel. Make sure you specify LPT1 as the port you want. Try reinstalling the driver. It should be in the list of drivers.

Ink rubs off or prints double/messy

Sounds like your fuser is getting ready to stop working. Your fuser creates the heat so the toner from the cartridge is baked onto the paper as it passes through, your toner is rubbing off, so you could try cleaning, but I'm sure it'll be a new fuser, or possibly a fuser roller. Your owners manual has all the information and step by step trouble shooting guide to let you know.

Laserjet 4l missing bits

If you haven't already, get a driver here: and install it over the old one. If text is missing at the bottom of the page, this usually means that the application is attempting to print outside of the printer's printable area. Most printers, including HP LaserJets, can not print right up to every edge of the page. Adjust the bottom margin upwards in Word. Usually, in Print Preview anything outside of the printable area as known by the printer driver will not be displayed. This is not guaranteed to work since there are many way things can go quirky, but it's usefull to try. Can't tell you much about the alignment though, hope you work it out.
