Don'thave to smell, the belt just snapped in half.unplug the vacuum and try to turn the brush roller by hand,if it turns real freely the belt is broke.it should be kind of hard to turn by hand if the belt was good

How do I change the belt on the 116 model?

To properly fix a belt on a Kenmore vacuum, you will first need to indicate whether this is an upright or a canister vacuum. The model given, 116, is only the first part of the model number, and all Kenmore vacuums, upright and canister style, start with 116. There is a period first, then a whole string of numbers, 116.255553 etc.

Kenmore vacuums are mainly made by Panasonic for Sears, and most will use a Panasonic belt. If the belt is an upright, this makes it simple, and will be a Panasonic "UB" belt.

For a canister vacuum, most models use what's referred to as a cogged belt. This type of belt has little teeth on the inside of the belt, and is Panasonic CB-5 belt.

Instructions on How to Replace the Belt for an Upright;
There will usually be to plastic screws on the top of the agitator housing on the base of the vacuum, that will say belt access. Simply take a flat head screw driver, and turn the screws so that the screw is pointing up and down on both sides. Then pull the plastic agitator housing, or the top of the base of the vacuum off. Inside you will see a the roller brush, and the belt (or broken belt). Simply take the new belt and wrap it around the silver pulley located in the back of the machine, opposite the roller brush, and wrap the other end of the belt through the roller brush. Stretch the roller brush back into the housing of the machine, and replace the top of the base of the vacuum back on the machine. You should give the belt a tug, to ensure that the brush is spinning when the belt is being pulled..

Kenmore upright Model 116 31912101 Brush doesn't turn. Little red reset pin doesn't move.

Something is jammed in it or the belt is bad.Turn it upside down. You will see 4-6 screws.Remove the screws and the plate they are holding. Now the brush is exposed. The belt hooks on to the brush and a small wheel on the other end.Remove the brush and belt.Make sure the area is free of debris. While you have it off, replace the belt.

I have a kenmore upright direct drive vacuum. The vacuum works fine in all ways except the brush just stopped working. Any ideas?

The rubber belt which drives the brush could be broken or the brush can be clogged with string and hair etc.

Brush will not turn

The vacuum needs a new belt. Check the brush roller, if it turns easily without resitance, it needs a new belt. Get your model number off the back of the machine. It's on a sticker near the floor with UL logo on it. Go to Sears and gets some belts.

Is there an easy way to see if a drive belt may be broken? It's so difficult to push my Kenmore upright vacuum!

Well there is only turning the vacuum over and see if the brush is rotating.

If it is not moving then you need to replace the belt.

If you need to know how to remove the bottom plate to replace the belt, please post the model number, the numbers you posted above are not the kenmore model numbers, the model numbers will look like this

The agitator on my upright 116.35923500 does not turn unless it is in an almost laying down position

116 generally indicates you are using a KENMORE???? If so this is a SEARS catalogue number for their cross reference , not a model number....

So assuming that I will take a stab here The problem you describe is generally caused by a slipping belt, in an upright vac or power head. When you lower the handle the weight is relieved from the head of an the vac and so the brush will turn more freely. Take your model # to SEARS and pick up 2 fresh belts, one for now and one for future.
< Remove the lower cover, looking for screws on the underside and pull the brush roll out. Clean the hair and **** out of the ends of the brush under its bearing caps, while watching for spacer washers. Spray WD40 on the brush shaft and wipe away excess with a rag. Then reinstall the new belt in reverse order. Pay special attention the how the lower panel is inserted when removing to change the belt. Quite often these housings have a lip which seats into the bumper area of a vac. Please post back with more info

Brush roller on Hoover upright stops turning

There should be a belt tensioner for the V belt, maybe it is not contacting the belt when you tilt the handle back. If this is less then 1 year old, then it is under warranty, take it in to a warranty servicer for warranty repair.

I have a Kenmore upright beltless that suddenly, the brush stopped spinning. Do you have an answer for this?

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. On the Kenmore upright the belt is broken and needs replacing and you can take it to Sears / Kenmore or a local vac dealer and they can change it for you or you can attempt to do it yourself, usually it just takes a screwdriver and either a flat or a geared belt for less than $10.00 to $15.00 is an estimate.
