Question about Sony STR-DE525

Sony str-de675 clicking noise now in protect mode

For the last year or two I have heard random clicking noises coming from my receiver. Until about 2 months ago it had not affected anything but since then when it clicked my center channel would shut off and come back on. I assumed it was some kind of short because when i would wiggle the audio cables on the back it would click my center channel on and off. About a week ago while i was in the other room i heard a noise and when i checked on it there was a slight burn smell and the receiver was on protect mode. Everything has been disconnected and the receiver has been unplugged since and it stays on protect. I ordered a new receiver but i liked the old one and would have a use for it if i could fix it reasonably. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sure! Any P.C. with an audio output jack, like an 8mm phono jack to stereo for example, can be connected to any audio input on the receiver.

There's a button that turns the speakers OFF right above the headphone jack.

Testimonial: "@dunnbiker Very true on assumptions! I've tried everything the manual suggests. Right now, nothing is connected to the unit, but upon power up, I get the SP:OFF display (which is not seen in the DEMO mode). I will try the headphone jiggling idea and see what happens."

Sony STR-DB 930. Intermitent sound quality from front speakers ( low then loud ) with sharp clicking noises like relay switches clicking on and off. Thanks Dave.

I have had this problem which then developed into the unit going into PROTECT mode. This is typically caused by the relays and perhaps some other components developing dry joints over time. I had a professional refresh the solder joints and it works perfectly now

Str-de685 WHEN I POWERED I HEARD A CLICK BUT EVERYTHING OFF NO LIGHT.I CHECK BOTH FUSES AND ARE OK.

There is a relay on the power supply circuit board that might be faulty or has bad solder connections. If this relay does not work, power is not applied and everything is "dead". I had to re-solder the speaker relays on my STR-DE675 because they had cracked solder joints which made them work intermittently. It's possible that the power relay is what is causing your problems. If it has bad solder joints it might click, but power might not be able to pass trough the joints.

Does it still click when you turn it on or did it only do this once?

My Sony STR-DG500 wont turn on just clicks once and nothing.

Sounds like faulty psu (pwer suply unit) Amp is going into protection mode. Disconnected all speaker and av wires (only power) turn up volume and see if it stays on. If not psu, sounboard or volume function faulty. If on, connect one speaker L or R. Go to tuner mode to tuned radio station an listen for sounds. If on, connect speakers and av cables one by one and test each one on its own until amp switches off, Investigate from there were problem is. Make sure speakerwires is not shorting out.

Sony STR DB-930 Receiver jumping into protector mode

I went through the amp/receiver and used small star washers on all the grounding screws I could find including the one securing the transformer, cleaned dust off all circuit boards, checked output transistors and fuses, all OK.

Re Assembled unit and it worked OK.

I will buy a fan and fan it to avoid sourcing heatsinks for the previusly suggested IC's.

Thanks for the technical help, sure solved my problem.

Regards

Darryl.
