mine is the same. I have my computer hooked up to an mbox for recording into pro tools. I actually pick the sound up when recording but if i unplug and run on batteries (which is not for long these days) then the sound is gone.

You need a ground loop isolator or some way to ground the laptop/power supply to remove the noise. the noise is electrical interference produced by the inverter.

You have whats called an earth imbalance, you may indeed find that you need to ensure BOTH ends are earthed, usually via the cable, but some/most adapters are above earth and cause this problem, all i can suggest is to try a new adapter, and make sure you have good earths between the two units, via the Audio cables. The reason it works OK without the PSU, is there there is then NO earth connected from the mains..
I have found sometimes that this symptom is indicative of a bad earthing of the House/mains wiring too. This is common if ion a dry climate, you may need to earth out your system better, or just use batteries when doing this?

The noise is certainly not coming from the speaker as I have muted it. The noise more like a low frequency noise, I am not able to decide whether it is from the fan or from some other components

Hi. Check for outside sources that might be causing the static noise. The laptop might be near an Electro-magnetic emitting device like a high-powered lamp or speakers or wireless phones or even a device with a running motor.

Resolution and Static noise

Right click the desktop and hit properties, then hit the settings tab and change your resolution to 1024 x 600.

can't help you much with the "static" noise other than to say that computers have moving parts and electrical current travelling through them, which generates noise.
