Question about Water Heaters

1 Answer

Hot water out line seems to be pluged

I have rheem 50 gal ele. water heater. About a yr. ago the volumn of hot water started to reduce. Now its about 1/4 of what it was. I have the same volumn in cold water as always. When it first started I could turn on my hot water at my sink several times and it would burst through and be fine until the next time we used it. All my hot water faucets are restricted so I assume its in the water heater. I drained the tank and pieses that look like strips of brown paper bag came out but it did not change the volumn. I have all the hot water as ever. what can I do?

Hello Check the red overtemp reset button at the temp control.Check for contintuity at the elements with a volt meter (pull one wire off first) they should have a reading otherwise they are open & shot.Last is overdrawing (busted pipe) shut off the cold water supply for a 1/2 hour and open it back up and feel the hot water supply pipe.Is it hot?The tank can't keep up with the demand.

Brown discoloration is evidence of a rusting or corroded steel pipe somewhere in you plumbing system. Trace the water lines back from the faucet and replace all the steel pipe.
White discoloration is minerals that separate out when the water is heated.
You can change the Anode Rod and it should help. It is not an instant fix, the rod will take a week or two to do its job.
If your water heater is still under warranty, call Rheem, they may replace the water heater free.

Top heating element was broke. Replaced got hot water for week. Now have to run hot water for 20 mins before it goes from warm to hot. Top heating element reads 240VAC bottom heating element reads...

look for a badly connected power line ont he bottom element, or any connection upstream of the power terminals. voltage readings usually drop to that range when you only have one side of the 220v circuit connected.

Pop off valve dripping Rheem 50 gal electric valve at bottom

If you are reffering to the drain valve at the bottom of the hot water tank. It may be leaking due to the O ring being cracked or worn out. You can either drain the tank and replace the valve or you can buy a hosebib brass cap and thread it on the existing valve. There is no cause for alarm when doing this as this valve is just to drain the tank when replacing your hot water heater
