If it's a local station, call them and ask what service provides their closed captioning, and get the contact information for them. Call that service and ask how your patrons with good spelling might apply to work for the captioning service (either as a volunteer or paid position). I am sure it is a challenging job and they could probably use all the help they can get!

(Watch the closed captioning for a breaking news event -- the person at the service who is typing the words is having to transcribe what is being said as it is spoken. That surely is the most challenging job they have!)

Yes - perhaps yoga, or a nice massage. You have some seriously uptight members!! It is either a computer error in translating a word from speech, or a human mistyping a word.... but it's all at the broadcast end, you really have no control over it. Try looking up "closed captioning" on Wikipedia.... and relax, the world is not perfect :)

Closed captioning is done by someone typing in the words. If the words are wrong, they spelled them wrong. There is no voice to text technology involved. Even on CD's, there is closed captioning available where the speech is garbled but it is actually words.

I haven't been able to put closed captioning on tv. I don't understand how and what code to use to get the closed captioning to work.

Enable Caption Using the Original Remote
  1. Press the [CCD] button to change the CCD mode.
  2. Using this button will set the Closed Caption mode when viewing a DTV or TV channel.
Enable Caption Using the TV Menu
  1. Open the Menu screen, select the third icon, in the middle, this is the Setup Menu.
  2. In the Setup Menu, choose the Caption option.
  3. Caption: There are three items in it - Analog Closed Caption, Digital Closed Caption and Digital Caption Style
  • Analog Closed Caption: CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, TEXT1,TEXT2, TEXT3, TEXT4.
  • Digital Closed Caption: Service1, Service2, Service3, Service4, Service5, Service6.
  • Digital Caption Style: There are two Caption Styles. One is the automatic function set as the broadcaster, while the other is the custom style where you can adjust the font size, color, opacity, background color etc., accordingly.

There is a black box in the center of my tv

I would suspect your closed caption settings are set to text and there is no text available on the channel . I would figue out how to navigate the tv menu to cc or closed caption settings and set it to off. Sometimes there will be a cc.. or closed caption button on the tv remote to change those setting directly.

Black box fills most of screen on certain channels

THE cc key on your remote control might of been pressed by accident and the close caption was enabled, to correct this all you need to do is press the cc key repeatedly untill the c.c. is turned off, the tv display will go through cc1, cc2, txt1 etc. untill you get to the part that says cc off.

Black box appears in middle of screen

go into the menu and look at the closed caption option----if TEXT is highlighted--this is your problem---select CC! or if it has it OFF.The TEXT will only appear on certain channels and it most likely was activated by someone changing the closed caption options. If this has been helpful give me a vote to let me know.

I have a black rectangle covering the center of the screen from top to bottom. How do I get rid of it? I tried the menu for Closed Captioning but it did not seem to work.

Try turning off the closed caption and text also check v chip, if you have a channel or channels blocked it could cause a black rectangle to pull up on the screen, if that doesn't work try resetting the unit to factory settings

Black box blocks on certain programs

Check your closed-caption settings. You should find it's set for "text" right now. Turn it to "off" (or to "caption 1" if you want the captioning).

In text mode, the TV blanks out a portion of the screen to put up text that never shows up. You only notice on channels or programs where captioned programs are being broadcast. This is a common problem; on many remotes there's a single button to control captions and it's easy to hit it and change settings without realizing it.

Closed caption and black square

your TV do not disable close caption in composite mode. It may in component mode. Please make sure that the close caption in your TV menu is not set to "text"
Please be advice that CC :Text is the ONLY one that can give you a black box.
