Question about Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition

Problem loading software in Vista Ultimate

I have what will probably seem like a completely novice problem - but I'm stumped.
I have a machine that was running XP - and I upgraded it to Vista Ultimate. It was a clean XP install (it had been purchased as refurbished) and I hadn't run it under XP and as the first order of business upgraded it to Vista Ultimate.
I am able to use the system and to access the internet, etc. However, when I try to load add-ons to IE (like the Netflix Movie Viewer - or the ABC movie viewer), nothing happens. I get the series of messages about "run" or "save" the file and then nothing happens. If I select run - nothing runs. If I select save, it asks me where to save it (and I indicate a variety of places) and then the file never shows up.
What is going on? It seems like there is some kind of protection that is on that I can't seem to get around. I've tried turning off the firewall, turning off pop-blocking, all kinds of things. I'm just missing something basic, it must be. Any ideas?

This didn't turn out to do it - but I did get a little further as to what the problem is. It turns out that I cannot save anything to the hard drive. I can't load software or save a file to the hard drive. It never gives an error - it just starts to save and then goes away.

I reset the permissions on the drive (which was set inapporpriately as read only for some reason), I logged in as the administrator (that didn't help), I turned off UserAccountControls (and turned them back on again), I reloaded the driver for the hard drive (ATA). Any idea of what's up here?

Check the privacy options in internet explorer under tools and options. Also check the UAC controls on vista and make sure the addons are not being blocked. There is also two versions of internet explorer on vista one with and one without addons try the other and see if it works.

The Windows Vista Ultimate restart itself after about an hour. Why?

This is probably due to the version of Vista that you have. Is it an official version that was installed and registered with a genuine Product Key and serial number? If not and it is a copied version, Microsoft can sometimes use updates and software to force the computer into that loop.

Window vista and kaspersky anti-virus will not let me log onto my company e-mail which is threw a microsoft exchange sever

You can check if it is the antivirus (AV) software simply by right clicking on the kaspersky icon (bottom left of your screen) and closing the application down temporarily, then try connecting to your exchange server. If you can now connect (without the AV software running), your problem is just with the setup of the AV software. You may previously have responded wrongly to a security request question and often the quickest route is just to uninstall and re-install the AV software if you don't know how to rectify this. If you still can't connect without the AV software loaded the AV software probably is not your problem so re-load it then speak with your IT guys at work to set your machine up correctly for access.

I'm a complete novice on laptops, however my problem is i have a dell inspiron 1501 which came with windows vista. a friend installed windows 7 for me but i want to know did he have the option to go...

Hi,
If he did an upgrade on the system then your files should be there and intact, if he did a complete instalation the your file are all gone as a new(complete) instalation wil format the harddrive and will delete everything on the HDD.
He could have the option to save your file first befor the new instalation.

How do i download the back up recovery software for vista?

If you bought your notebook it should have come with the installation disk. If you didn't then you will have to probably buy it again. I think you can contact Microsoft and get a recovery disk shipped for cheap, or free, to you but i'm not to sure on this.

it's probably the Canon EOS 20D
go to http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010131.asp and select windows vista

it's only available for windows vista 32 bit, so it probably doesn't work if you have the 64 bit version
