I've had my washing machine for about 6months and in the last 3months I've noticed grey stains on my clothes, it doesn't cover the whole item, it just leaves patches. I've tried solving the problem myself by following the maintenance instructions but nothing seems to work. If anyone knows what's causing the stains I'd be grateful for the solution :-)

Check that the dispenser is clean, it may be gunged up with black gunge, use soda crystals and put machine on hottest wash. If all is clean it could be down to seal gone in drum letting grease into system. Good luck, let me know how it goes.
I had a similar problem with my Kenmore front loader. Turned out that the rubber lining around the door was trapping dirty, soapy water causing a nasty residue to collect. That residue got onto the clothes. I cleaned the rubber liner and now keep the washer door open between uses. I still occasionally wipe down the rubber liner with a wet rag. Problem seems to have been solved.
I had the same problem, and it turns out that it is NOT the seal. It is the liquid fabric softener. The fabric softener dispenser needs to be cleaned periodically or it gets a black waxy, goopy, build up. It is this same buildup that ends up staining your clothes with dark brown or black stains.
Just remove the dispenser and wash it our very well and the problem will be gone.
hmmm..let's see..sounds like you have some residue accumulating from something possibly seeping into the tub. That can be old rubber, a metal sheath, or even an leak of lubricant. Like an old car, there are parts of every mechanical device that need to be attended to.
I'd recommend you find the most seasoned person that works on older machines, to come by and assess what is 'leaking' on your clothing. Grey comes from something metallic or rubber/plastic.
Hope you can solve this one, and keep that old machine happy.
liquid detergent is a pain and not as good as powder. liquid detergent often makes machine smell as well
i doubt there is a fault with the machine. try putting on a boil wash with no clothes and this will clear out the slime left behind by the liquid detergent.
you didn't say what colour the stains are but iy grey or brown it could be from your water supply - a more common problem than you might think.
turn off water and remove the supply hose. there should be a gauze filter at one end and make sure not clogged with dirt. also look into the spigot of the vavle and see if any muck there.
Have you tried Calgon to get rid of limescale deposits?
Also have you used any laundry bleach at any point, because it stays in the machine for ages and clothes come out with faded patches and bleach marks for weeks afterwards.
