Question about Toshiba Satellite A205-S5879 Laptop

Loss of Sound

I also have a Toshiba M50-164 and the sound has gone off. I have tried going into control panel/admin tools etc (as advised on another site) to make sure Windows Audio Service was showing AUTO, it is so I am now at a loss. Any help would be appreciated. Last weeks it went off but then came back, but no such luck now.

I put in the product below even though it is a Toshiba M50-164, because I can't find correct produt in your list

I have AC97, so I clicked on that. I have Windows XP so I then clicked on (2nd blue line) Windows 98Gold....2000/xp......I wasn't sure what to click on next as there was steos 1, 2, 3 and go, so I clicked on step 1. It went into the updating mode and it installed whatever that was but nothing has happened. I am not any good at this so I might not have done what you meant me to do. Can you help me again please. I will need to be told in plain (very plain) english as this is all new to me. Thanks (RosMWil@aol.com)

Thank you, I have done the scan and it came up with 20 critical outdated drivers but I was bothered about going further in case it made other things go wrong. Last night my nephew checked the Windows drivers and said everything was showing fine (everything was ok except it got a small black square when he clicked to show no sound was coming out). He thinks it is the hardware rather than the software, ie. speakers/lose connection?. Thanks so much for getting back to me, I will have to just use it without noise until I get another computer.

Your unit uses a Realtek audio driver and is one of the following:

Realtek AC97 HD or Realtek AC97

The download link is here.

Please post your results here (especially if the reinstallation doesn't fix your issue).

Sorry for the confusion, let's try this download link. The driver is compatible with Windows XP (and several other OSes but most importantly XP).

A quick install of that driver using the setup file should do the trick.

Post back if you have any problems.

You should just have to download this file (WDM_A406.exe) and run it. It should restore the sound on your unit (you'll probably need to reboot after install).

As for the other outdated drivers, I wouldn't worry so much about those, it sounds like you're running a program like nodevices or something that scans and downloads new device drivers (or at least you're using the trial version of it), you should only need the audio driver I've linked...

Loss of volume

Hi,

About 6 months ago I had to wipe my hard drive clean and then reinstall all disks for my Dell Dimension 4500 system. Ever since then, there has been no sound for emails, music, Start-up and Logging off etc...etc.

When trying to play a cd for instance, or anything requiring sound, the following message appears:
media_player9.gif 0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You may encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
  • Your sound device is in use by another program. Quit other programs that may be using your sound device, and then try to play the file again.
  • Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see the Sound Troubleshooter in Windows Help or refer to your sound device's documentation.
  • You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again.

There are no other programs running and I have repeatedly gone to control panel and gone through all the Windows sound trouble shooting suggestions regarding sound devices. All wire connections have been checked and there was no change in regard to the plug-in areas.

Everything worked great soundwise prior to re-installation, no wires or connection locations were changed, and no one else has used my computer so I have ruled out any accident by another person.

Please call me or email me at l.bassing@att.net, Phone is 551-497-2795 to help me while at my computer. It will be so much appreciated. This problem has been driving me crazy for too long.

Thanks so much for your prompt attention and looking foward to speaking to a tech repair adviser asap.

Sincerely,
Lauré Bassing

No sound on laptop

start by making sure sound is not muted--toshiba is Fn + ESC. if not make sure volume is up. then check your driver---click..start/control panel/performance and maintenance..admin tools icon...double click--computer management..device manager. look for your sound double click...double click on your device.. under the general tab check device status. if working troubleshooting may help. if not check your driver it may be disabled or missing. if missing reinstall. if disabled enable it.
let us know what you find out.
