The LJ 4100 detects the paper size in tray 2 automatically. If you print a configuration page:
MENU them INFORMATION then ITEM then CONFIGURATION PAGE then SELECT.
The page will print and show what size paper the machine thinks is in Tray 2 if it says LEGAL and you have LETTER you need to check the paper back stop in tray 2.
The back stop sets the length of the paper if it is not at Letter (8 1/2 x 11) the machine will not detect LETTER. Even if it just a little bit off or between positions.

If it is set at LETTER then you may have bad switches in the machine that are operated by the tray.
Or the arms on the tray that operate the switches are not moving properly.
You will find the arms on the rt, side of the tray and feel them change position when you move the backstop.
Hope this helps.

Use the resets menu to restore factory settings

Resets menu
Use the reset and restore options on this menu with caution. You can lose buffered page data or
printer configuration settings when you select these items. Only reset the printer under the following
circumstances:
! You want to restore the printer’s default settings.
! Communication between the printer and computer has been interrupted.
The items in the resets menu will clear all memory in the printer, while CANCEL JOB clears only the
current job.
Table 28. Resets menu
Item Values Explanation
NEW TONER
CARTRIDGE=NO
NO
YES
Change the value to YES when you first install a non-HP
toner cartridge. YES allows the printer to recognize the new
cartridge, and the printer resets the toner gauge to full.
RESTORE
FACTORY
SETTINGS
Press SELECT to perform a simple reset and restores most of
the factory (default) settings. This item also clears the input
buffer for the active I/O.
POWERSAVE=
ON
ON
OFF
This item turns the PowerSave mode on or off.
POWERSAVE=ON mode does the following:
! Minimizes the amount of power consumed by the printer
when it is idle
! Reduces wear on the printer’s electronic components by
turning off the backlight on the display
When you send a print job, press a control panel key, open a
paper tray, or open the top cover, the printer automatically
comes out of PowerSave mode.
In the configuration menu, you can set how long the printer
remains idle before it enters PowerSave mode. Turning
PowerSave off is not recommended.
Note
PowerSave turns off the backlight on the display, but the
display is still readable.

if you setup tray 1 any type, any size and tray 2 to plain, and letter size, it will allow you to use tray 2 for your plain letter jobs but will pull from the manual feed tray first only if the paper is in the manual feed tray if this makes any sense to you... please mark this as a fixya...

My LaserJet 4,000N HP printer is giving me an error everytime I print. when printing certain documents I get a message on the printer " tray 1 load plain A" to get past this i have to push ok...

you need to go into your printer properties and make sure when you push print, it's NOT asking to be printed on A4 paper which thats what it sounds like. Make sure its set for exactly what you have in the tray and make sure the printer paper tray setting are set to exactly what you have in the tray also... should this be of any help, please mark as FixYa!! My HP 4100N printer often automatically selects to print from tray 1 (the manual feed), when I want to print from tray 2 (the automatic feed). How do I set the default tray?

HP Laser Jet 4100 HP Not pulling paper from Tray 2
Action: The 4100 will look at tray 1 first then tray 2 If tray 1 is empty it will pull from tray 2 if the papersize matches the job otherwise back to tray 1 and ask for the paper. Your machine likely thinks the paper in tray 2 is not the size you want. For instance you have LETTER in tray2 But the machine thinks it is legal. The LJ 4100 detects the paper size in tray 2 automatically. If you print a configuration page: MENU them INFORMATION then ITEM then CONFIGURATION PAGE then SELECT. The page will print and show what size paper the machine thinks is in Tray 2 if it says LEGAL and you have LETTER you need to Check The Paper Backstop in TRAY 2.

I want to print from my HP Laserjet 4100N tray 2 instead of tray 1. How can I do that?

Do a Configuration Page print out from the printers 'Information Menu'

Perform a paper path test from tray 2;
<Information Menu> , <Item> , <paper path test> , <Select> , use <Value> to select <Input Tray =2> , <Select> x 3 times.
Is the print out correct?

Check the paper size setting for Tray 2 matches the size you are trying to print onto.
Check / Adjust setting in the 'Paper Handling' menu.
Make sure Tray 1 has no paper in it when you send the print Job.

Check your Driver settings in Windows

Printing problems - i can only print manual feed...

the manual tray is the is the one above the tray,
1-either your tray is set incorrectly must be set to Letter/Plain
priority is tray 2 not tray 1
tray one is the by-pass / manual
since this printer does not have a screen on it everything is setup through the PC.
print a configuration page and you will see all the settings

Tray 1- load plain letter

Linda,

On printer check media/paper type tray 2 or 3 is plain and tray 2/3 is set for letter paper size too, via printer control panel. Also check under paper handling other options for tray 1, also on tray 2 and 3, I think there is a blue little round switch on left should be set as letter not custom.

Some paper types cannot be feed from anywhere else but tray1/bypass ie labels/laminate/card stock.

Check print driver on pc has tray 3 option installed and is not set as default to print to manual bypass/tray 1

light flashing cause printer wants paper type/size that it "thinks" it hasn't got in tray 2/3

If that dont cover it...post back
