Question about HP LaserJet 4100n Printer
The LJ 4100 detects the paper size in tray 2 automatically. If you print a configuration page:
MENU them INFORMATION then ITEM then CONFIGURATION PAGE then SELECT.
The page will print and show what size paper the machine thinks is in Tray 2 if it says LEGAL and you have LETTER you need to check the paper back stop in tray 2.
The back stop sets the length of the paper if it is not at Letter (8 1/2 x 11) the machine will not detect LETTER. Even if it just a little bit off or between positions.
If it is set at LETTER then you may have bad switches in the machine that are operated by the tray.
Or the arms on the tray that operate the switches are not moving properly.
You will find the arms on the rt, side of the tray and feel them change position when you move the backstop.
Hope this helps.

Use the resets menu to restore factory settings
Use the reset and restore options on this menu with caution. You can lose buffered page data or
printer configuration settings when you select these items. Only reset the printer under the following

The items in the resets menu will clear all memory in the printer, while CANCEL JOB clears only the
Table 28. Resets menu
Item Values Explanation
Change the value to YES when you first install a non-HP
toner cartridge. YES allows the printer to recognize the new
cartridge, and the printer resets the toner gauge to full.
Press SELECT to perform a simple reset and restores most of
the factory (default) settings. This item also clears the input
buffer for the active I/O.
This item turns the PowerSave mode on or off.
POWERSAVE=ON mode does the following:
! Minimizes the amount of power consumed by the printer
when it is idle
! Reduces wear on the printer’s electronic components by
turning off the backlight on the display
When you send a print job, press a control panel key, open a
paper tray, or open the top cover, the printer automatically
comes out of PowerSave mode.
In the configuration menu, you can set how long the printer
remains idle before it enters PowerSave mode. Turning
PowerSave off is not recommended.
PowerSave turns off the backlight on the display, but the
display is still readable.
