Do you have the i-tunes version or the mp3? At any rate, the songs must be saved onto the expadable memory card as the phone itself has a very limited internal memory (like 5megs) which will be blown away with just a couple songs. i suggest not going above 512MB for the mem card. any higher that that and it becomes unreliable (as-in reformatting itself and deleting all your stuff).
