Question about Pure Digital Flip Video Ultra Camcorder

1 Answer

Flip Video Ultra won't playback/delete videos.

My Flip Video Ultra won't playback or delete any videos. It doesn't do anything when I press either button. I've taken the batteries out for a few days, and still arrive at the same problem.

I tried hooking it up to my computer (Mac w/ XP bootcamp partition) and the Mac says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." and the XP half only recognizes it as a Mass Storage Device in the device manager, but it won't show up in My Computer.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

This flip also was acting a little strange beforehand - it showed 60 minutes available when there were many clips already recorded. I could play back all the clips, and I could record. But the total available record time stayed 60 minutes.
DOn't know if this is related to the download problem, but could be a general interface error.

Trying to hold of on initializing the camera and losing all those clips.

Using my ultra flip camera: when I playback my videos on my computer the images are choppy, jumpy or in slow motion while the audio is fine. what can i do?

Two possible Solutions

1) Have you transferred the videos off your flip, and on to your computers hard drive?

USB ports have greatly increased in speed in the last few years but they can still have trouble playing "live" video directly from the camera.

Solution: Plug in your flip. Drag the files to your "desktop" or "my documents" or any other place you like to store them. Play the files from there.

2)Does the video playback ok on your flip? Or on a different computer?

If so the solution is simple, but expensive. Your computer does not have enough processing power/ memory to play back the video. Full uncompressed video is a very large file and most computers older than 2 years have trouble rendering the video frames fast enough. The HD we see on sites like youtube and even on Blu-ray have been compressed. When the files come off the camera they are not compressed and require alot of computing power.

Solution: Buy a new computer. Sorry I know it is an expensive fix. The good news you don't need anything too fancy. A laptop with a 2+ Ghz (gigahertz) processor and 3+ GB of memory, will do the trick and cost between $300-$500.

Hope that helped

I have the HD version and playback seems grainy still. Is that normal...? Was thinking that is should be ultra clear since it is HD.

Not all HD is alike. The sensor size on the Flip is quite small and thus, the HD quality on the Flip will be less than on a larger HD video camera.
If you suspect there may be something wrong with your quality, the best thing to do is to go on websites like Flickr.com and Vimeo.com and look for videos done with the same model you have in similar lighting conditions. If the quality of other users' video is better than yours, there may be something wrong with your sensor, in which case, you will need to contact Flip's customer support to have your camera repaired or replaced.

I tried to save video from the flip camera to computer. it removed the videos from the camera but I cannot find them in the computer. Any suggestion on how to find these lost videos?I did not delete...

Look in your 'Documents' folder. It should be in the 'Videos' folder in the file named "FlipShare Data".
Remember, look in your (user) documents folder. NOT public folders. Good luck.

FLIP ULTRA FILES DELETED, CAN THEY BE RESTORED

I have had success with this flip camera recovery software... Download the program
Video Recovery Software

You have to use a card reader either on your computer or an external USB card reader. Put the card in the card reader, open the recovery program, then select the drive where files are deleted, then press "Next" and wait for it to do it's magic.
