Hi, Most likely you are missing
the chipset driver. You will be able to download one for your modelt from HP
website. If your hardware is usb 2.0, Installing the chipset will enable this.

download it directly onto the laptop or any other internet-pc available, transfer the data using usb-flash drive (usb-stick, usb-mp3-player) or burn it onto a CD - copy the downloaded driver software to your harddisk, the desktop for example, then double-click onto the .exe file(it is a selfinstaller for winxp and win2000) let it work it's magic, reboot the laptop and things should be fine now!
