I've finally decided to upgrade from a Sony CDU33a (2X) to a higher speed
cd-rom. I'm seriously looking at a Teac55e. Are their any comments out their
about this drive? I've had my sony plugged into a SBawe32 and assume that
the teac will plug in somewhere else as it's not supported on the soundcard.
Should I wait for a 8X, get a cheaper 4X or look at some other 6X's. Thanks
for any advice.

For the benefit of other readers, both of these guys are talking about
the TEAC 56E (a 6x drive), not the 55 (an alleged 4x) which has a very
questionable reputation. The 56 appears to be a much better animal.

I have the Teac 55E and it IS 6X speed i.e around 900kbytes/sec
continuous. It will plug into any IDE connector though performance
will be best under WIN95 and the normal IDE interface rather than via
a sound card whic uses loads of processor time.
It seems to be totally plug 'n play compatible

The Teac 55E is a 4x drive.
This drive has a 128kB buffer (compared to 256kB on Toshiba 5302B, Creative
420E, etc).
The drive that I have is rather noisy (chilly, head-scraping-disc
kind of sounds when the disc spins). This could, however, be a one-off
fault with this unit, since there are no similar complaints on the newsgroup.
This drive will give you installation problems if you're using the earlier
Linux kernels (1.2.8 or thereabouts). The problem has been fixed with later
kernels.
The plus side of this drive is that it is fully Win95 PNP compatible.
It also shuts down the motor if the disc is not accessed (don't care about
the power, but at least it cuts out the squeaking noise!!)
Your Sony 2x is probably connected to the Sony connector on your AWE.
The newer drives are mostly connected to the IDE connector. You will not
need a new IDE card if you have only 1 hard disk, as the HD is a master and
the new CDROM drive is the slave.
The 4x drive is in the mainstream of the market now, and is downright cheap.
Value for money (cost/performance ratio) isn't good for the 6x & 8x.
Also, I've only come across 1 8x on the market, the Stingray.
