JennAir JFC2087HRS Freezer works but the top doesn't

The freezer is working but the refrigerator isn't. What and where are the Defrost Bimetal T-Stat and the Defrost Timer Unit. Would either of these be the problem?

The model listed above your post has only one compressor and one evaporator. Now if the model number listed is incorrect please let me know. I will send the service manual soon, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Side by side have two compressors which are sometimes seperately controlled. The defrost timer is normally a part of a printed circuit board and not a serviceable item. The defrost bi-metal thermostat would be found on the freezer side behind a cover panel and is attached directly in contact with the evaporator (the thing with fins like a radiator) tubing. The function is to prevent the freezer going into defrost mode until the coil tubing is below -5 degrees celcius.

Freezer ices up


Sounds like you have a defrost problem. The parts for your defrost cycle are.
1. Bimetal part# 4387503
2. Heater part# 2315531
3. Defrost timer Part# 482493

The heater and the bimetal is located in the freezer dept. behind the back wall. The defrost timer is located behind the cold control plate in the refrigerator department.

Jenn Air French/with freezer in bottom Model #JFC2087HRS, top part isn't cooling. Freezer is fine.


You may have a defrost problem check the freezer inside at the back and see if there is frost build up if so you need to check the DTS and element to see if they are good.Let me know and I will guide you through it.

We have a Norcold N841F. The freezer cools but the refrigerator doesn't. Using electricity.

Sounds like you have a defrost problem since the freezer side is working okay . It probably is not blowing cold air into the refrigerator side , so to check the defrost circuit , unplug the refrigerator and inside the refrigerator section at the top about 2" in from each side in the back , there are "D" slots to put a finger in , and pull downward and forward , to remove the control panel cover . Once removed , there is a 1/4" screw on each side holding the adjustment indicator panel on , 1 phillips screw behind both light bulbs , and 1 screw holding the complete panel to the rear wall . After removing these 5 screws , at the top right corner , with about 6-8 wires going to it , is the adaptive defrost board . Sometimes you can see the electronic board and on newer refrig's , a white box will be seen. Inside this box , is the adaptive defrost control . Disconnect the plug going to the board and on the right side of the PLUG , the far right wire is yellow , then another color , then white . Useing a small insulated wire with both ends stripped , insert one end into the yellow wire hole and the other into the white wire hole . This will bypass the adaptive board and send power directly through the defrost bimetal ( thermostat ) AND heater to check if they are good .Plug the refrigerator back in . Now , wait about 3-5 min and look for a red glow at the bottom of the inside freezer panel , which will be the defrost heater or listen for sizzling which will be the frost melting and dripping onto the heater .If NO red glow , watch for a spark while removing the jumper wire you installed , from the plug . If a spark IS seen , then the heater was on and the heater AND bimetal are good . If you see the red glow , hear the sizzling , or see the spark , then the adaptive defrost board should be replaced . If no glow , sizzling or spark , then unplug the refrigerator and reinstall the refrigerator control section . Remove the food in the freezer section enough so that the 2 screws holding the lower freezer panel on and the freezer panel , can be removed . Remove the panel . If the heater (black element at the bottom of the coils ) wires are visible , trace then to the top of the coils and disconnect . Use an ohm meter to determine if the element is good . If refrigerator is not cooling, it can be due to a defrost timer, which is causing the fridge to go into defrost cycle. Usually it takes 45-60 minutes for refrigerator to come out of defrost cycle. If the timer goes bad then it will not come out of defrost cycle and can result in this kind of issues. It can also occur due to defrost thermostat, it allows current to pass through it at temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit and prevents current from passing through it at 40 to 60 degrees. This is difficult to test, though, because it takes a prolonged, very-cold temperature to turn it on. The defrost thermostat is snapped onto the top portion of the evaporator. The thermostat sends temperature information to the processor. The defrost heater must be replaced when replacing the thermostat.

1. Remove the lower fan duct work from the evaporator cover.
2. Remove the 1/4-in. evaporator cover screws and remove the evaporator cover.
3. Disconnect the defrost thermostat wiring connector.
4. Remove the defrost thermostat from the evaporator.

Freezer not freezing though refrigerator appears to be working fine. There is a thin layer of ice on freezer floor.

Refrigerator is cold, freezer not freezing


Amana refrig have 2 main problems . 1 is the defrost bimetal ( 1" cylinder at the top right on the freezer coils with 2 wires ) and the other is a refrigerant leak where the copper tubing joins the aluminum tubing at the freezer coils ( evaporator coils ) . If your freezer fan is not working and you have frost on the freezer coils then replace the bimetal as this also controls the defrost heater ( defrost thermostat ) . If you have no frost on the coils ( for both checks , you will have to remove the inside rear freezer panel , maybe 12 screws ) , then a refrigerant leak has happened and the best solution would be to replace the refrig .
