Same thing is happening to my P4 Nikon.  The format option in the menu settings is grayed out though and it skips right over it, not allowing the card to be formatted in the camera.  I've tried 1gb, 2gb, 8 gb cards, all same issue.  The slider switch on the cards have been tried in both locked and unlocked positions.  It still says
Memory Card is write protected" on the lcd.  If anyone knows how to fix this, will be very grateful!!!

Hi there and welcome to FixYa.

Check your card, there is a little switch on the side of the card. One side says locked and the other side says unlocked. Move the switch to unlocked and put it back in and try it again.

Ok then, have you formated the card in the camera using the menu? That should fix it. If it doesn't let me know. If it does, then you can change the rating to a FixYa.

What model of Nikon are you using?

    Ok, so you have:

Turned the Mode Dial to Setup.

Then use the 4 way directional button to scroll down to format the memory card.

    Then choose Format.

    Then scroll right.

Then scroll up or down to Format.

Then press the ok button. It will say formatting.

Then your done. This will format your SD card if the switch on the card is unlocked.

Try it and let me know how it goes.

Ok, here is your problem. Your trying to use a card that's too big for your camera. Try a smaller card and you will see a difference.

I keep getting card cannot be used every time i put a memory card in my nikon coolpix s210 what can i do to fix this

If formatting does not work then most likely the memory card id faulty.
Memory cards such as SD and USB memory sticks do not last forever. they do fail eventually after many writes and file file deletes or damaged by not using Safely Remove Hardware on the computer.

A message always shows "MEMORY CARD IS WRITE

If you take out the memory card and look at it... it has a little button on the side... slide it over.... and then slap it back in the camera and that should take care of the problem.

You can also get the memory card locked/protected message if you are trying to use a SDHC card in a camera that does not support High Capacity (HC). High Capacity is any SD card with over 2GB of memory space.

Hope this helps.

My Nikon Coolpix P3 camera is not accepting my 4GB, SDHC San disk card?

The P3 works with SD cards, not SDHC cards. While SDHC cards will fit into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and won't work. You need to go with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

I bought a memory card San Disk (SDHC) 4 GB and when I put it into my Power Shot A 700 says memory card error. What can I do?

the reason you are getting the error message is because your camera is compatible with a maximum capacity of 2gb. try to have your sd card replaced to a 2gb instead.

Just put in new san disk 4gb memory card and receiving error message - memory card error. I unlocked memory on card itself (that little gray sliver that goes up and down) What gives

I'm guessing you bought a new 4GB SDHC card. Although it looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the card uses is very different. Unfortunately your camera was designed before the SDHC format came out. Sorry, but a SDHC card will not work with your camera.

You'll need to use standard SD cards (usually those 2GB or less). But if you really want to use a 4GB card, do a Google search for 4GB SD "non HC", with the non HC in quotes. Believe Transcend makes one.
