Hi Geralidine
Sounds like your pump is "air bound"...meaning that the impeller housing of the pump is full of air, and it cannot pump water.
Try bleeding the air out of the pump and put a positive pressure (garden hose pressure) and make sure that you shut the airbleed valve off after you start to pump.

if the pump is working correctly, it can either be, need more water to prime it, or something in the well, such as low water, plugged filter, etc....sometimes when you have a system that is intermittently used, it can take 20 or 30 minutes of continuous priming to get it to pull, enough water to maintain the prime.

SOURCE: Pump will not come up to pressure and turn off!

With no leaks in line and assuming the jet is not embedded in debris at bottom of well, try priming the pump again and getting all the air out.

SOURCE: jet pump does not pump water

I had a similar problem and as a last resort took the pump apart and cleaned it and the jet. It's a very old pump but works ok now.

SOURCE: I need to replace the front & rear bearing on

You can go ahead and disassemble your Davey pump.
You can take the bearing off. On it, at the side, you will
find the bearing number (could be 6001, 6002, 6201, etc.) etched. You can buy the replacement bearing from
hardwares near you.

Common Causes For Boiler Leaks

Having a leaking boiler is understandably an inconvenience none of us need or want. The cause of a leak is usually due to 2 factors - the age of the boiler or poor work by the engineer. However, these things happen and it's important to take the right steps to diagnosing the problem sooner rather than later. Prolonging the issue can ultimately lead to further damaging the internal components of your boiler, making for a more expensive repair.
Pressure Valve

A boilers pressure should be sat at one bar on the pressure gauge. If the pressure exceeds this amount, the pressure relief valve should leak water to prevent your boiler from bursting. If for some reason it don't, it's likely you will encounter problems with other components on your boiler.
Poor Fitting Installation
Common with newly installed boilers, it's an easy mistake for engineers to make to not seal pipework correctly which ultimately causes the fittings to leak water.
Boiler Pump
When you incur a leak with your boiler pump, you have two options to resolve the issue. Replace the pump entirely or, reseal the pump. However, depending on how much an engineer charges to replace the seal, it may or may not be worth replacing the pump with a brand new one.
Expansion Vessel
Most plumbing systems will need an expansion vessel as they will need to contain the water as it expands when it heats up. However, in time the pressure will takes it's toll on the vessel and it's been known to split the vessel, leak from the hose and/or leak from the fitting where the braided hose joins onto the tank. If you encounter all three problems it is best to replace the expansion vessel and the braided hose. Furthermore, if you have a leak on the fitting then it may just be a case of a poor fitting by the previous engineer. Therefore, it wouldn't hurt to get an engineer to PTFE the joint and adequately tighten it back together correctly to ensure the system stays leak free.
Corrosion
Pipe corrosion is a common problem that can be cheap or some-what costly to fix in some circumstances. A cheap fix would include corrosion on a part that is small and easy to access and replace. An expensive situation would incur a wide-spread corrosion in multiple areas which would likely result in replacing your boiler.

Davey XJ70 pumps bore water but flow dwindles when garden hose attached thus requiring pump to be turned off to stop burn out. Marc

possible it is a jet pump that has a return hose back to the foot valve to assist the pump to lift the bore water higher to work the pump
if that is the case ,when you turn on the tap on the pressure to the lift jet is reduced and so the pump cannot lift the water from the bore --it runs out of water
the fix here is to restrict the flow out of the tap so that jet pressure is maintained--- don't turn the tap on more than 1 turn
the reason is the lift height is too great ,indicating that the bore water level is lower than it normally is

HOW can I tell if a Goulds jet pump needs replacement?

pull the foot valve as it takes very little to allow the water to drain back out. Personally I would replace all pipes in the hole with heavy duty /high pressure plastic agricultural irrigation pipes

you should have the cooling system pressure tested and inspected for a leak that may only show up under pressure.it could be a slow leak from the water pump, frost plug, head gasket which wouldn`t show up in the oil, heater core.it sounds like a small leak but this is the best way to start to find it.

The well pump is running, but no water is supplied to thr irrigation lines. once I put water in the pump housing by removing the pump guage the pump pumps water through the irrigation lines. when it shuts...

Sounds like you have an air leak. First check your fittings, next carefully run water over the pump seals (avoid getting water on the motor or you'll hurt yourself and the pump if not worse) the pump will prime if the leaking seal is covered with water. Take your time and be careful and it should only be a matter of a loose fitting or simple seal swap.

Irrigation system problem

How big is your pump? How much HP rating? It could be a case of blocked water line. Just check your pipe lines and the gate valve for blockage. Just your e-mail

I have a 1/2 hp pump which I use to pump lake water to my irrigation system. The pump takes too long to turn on when the spicket is opened and sometimes too long to shut off when the water spicket is...

when using the spicket you use less flow than your irrigation system so a delay in the pump coming on is normal...otherwise if you are having the same problem when the irrigation is running..a pressure switch adjustment may be necessary...please follow the manufacturer instructions for your pressure switch.
