Question about Panasonic NN-S963BF Microwave Oven

Panasonic microwave nn-s963bf making grinding noise

Our panasonic microwave nn-s963bf (manuf. May 2003) is now making some loud grinding/grating noises when running. It almost sounds like a bearing is gone on the turntable, but am not sure. It sometimes continues for a second or two after the cooking stops. Any ideas if this is a serious (i.e. replace it) problem or something minor that is fixable (hopefully by me)?
thanks!

Checked out the turntable rotation by manually turning it as per the helpful info from MicrowaveSvc and it sounds fine.

Didn't know we could set it to be off via the control panel!

That seems to rule out the turntable system, so not sure what else it could be?

Looks like after I spun the motor manually last time, that the problem seems to be resolved! For now, looks like we're good to go. Thanks again for the helpful tips. Cheers!

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours is not set to be off via the control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

You can
order parts for this brand from Encompass (formerly Tritronics). Or you can call them toll-free at 866-779-5835.

If it sounds like it;s coming from the bottom of the cooking cavity, it may be one of the wheels on the turntable support grinding.

It may be worn and need a little drop of cooking oil on it where it connects to the support.

Does it do it when you run the oven empty for just a few seconds?

Panasonic Microwave NN-C980-B buzzing noise but it still works.

All:
I have a 2003 Sears Ultra Wave microwave 721.63682300 with a similar problem. A few months ago it started giving off short buzzes when turned on. That stopped but then I noticed that everything took twice as long to heat up. After quite a bit of teardown&inspection I found a circuit break in the inverter board leading to ZD704 diode (pictured). I will now try to find a replacement diode to see if replacing will fix it. Thanks for your postings.
