They all use 12V , so just get any 12v transformer that fits
the amp is i think 3.1amp or near.

Hi there,

The WD500gb external storage requires a specific adapter supplied by WD itself. You can have it fixed on the nearest electrical service center for your convenience or you could buy an adapter with the same rating (same polarity as well) so you could use your drive.

I'd still recommend purchasing the original drive either from ebay or WD site:

http://store.westerndigital.com/store/wdus/en_US/DisplayAccesoryProductDetailsPage/ThemeID.21986300/productID.108411100/categoryID.13096000/parid.13092600/catid.13096000

Hope this helps,

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

The adapter to my Western Digital Book does not respond

The monitor requires a adapter with a current output of 4 amps. but the Western Digital Book adapter can only supply 2 amps (half the current required by the monitor).
This means using the WD adapter on the monitor will stress this adapter beyond its capacity and continual use of this adapter on the monitor will cause it to fail and/or switch off if it has overload protection.
If you are having problems with the 2 amp adapter on the WD Book, then the power adapter could be faulty or it maybe OK when the adapter cools down.
I suggest you get a 12 volt 4 or more amps adapter for the monitor.
You may need an adapter for the WB book too if the adapter is faulty.

Is the secondary voltage required for a WD external storage book wdh1u5000n 12 volts DC?

There is no absolute answer to this, it depends on the USB ports of the computer. Normally on a dekstop it might not be required, on most laptops it would be.
But ... if there are ports available, I'd use them both all the time, reduce the risk of power problems.
