Posted by iupholster on Mar 03, 2009 I have a hunter J111 alignment machine. When I go to set castor and you get to the screen that shows all four wheels are lit up green and even numbers then when you are supposed to turn left as soon as you do then the left front sensor starts blinking the red fault arrow and will not change, If you turn the wheels back to the front you get the all green lights and numbers back. If you stick your hand in the IR beam it takes the numbers from 150 down to 30 then remove your hand the numbers and green comes back? Tied reinstall system disk did not work, don't think it is the sensor or it wouldn't work on the camber setting either?

That is the isr sensor moved or out of range, you need to call manufacturer.

The ir sensor is misaligned and cannot see the wheel, that is the reason why it starts measuring when you put the hand.

I gave you the form to contact manufacturer on the other thread.

Try moving the alignment computer backwards with the wheel turned. sounds like the lazer beam is too close and when the wheel is turned it goes out of range,
considering all other aspects of machine work like camber and toe specs.

How to Diagnose an Alignment Problem?

tire wear is a method of diagnosing an alignment problem
abnormal wear on the insides or out sides of the tread indicates a problem with toe in/out and or camber settings
wheel wobble at speed ( 20 mph up ) indicates castor setting problems
steering wheel not self centering after turns indicates castor settings
steering wandering on the road indicates worn steering /ball joints and or alignment settings out
car running sideways ( crabbing)on the road indicates worn rear suspension parts , broken center bolts on leaf springs ,and rear alignment problems which will affect front end alignment
this is indicated by the steering wheel position off center when driving straight ahead

Excessive steering wheel shaking

Most common indicators are. Wheel alignment ( not enough Castor adjustment) worn tie rod end/s Incorrect size tyres ( you have to have the rim sizes the same on both sides ) even though you noticed a difference Loose steering box / rack or worn rack mount rubbers Probably the noise under the floor as the rack is bashed up and down from the wobble. What you describe is castor wobble and some makers recommend 0 castor when in fact the setting should be 1/2 to 1 1/2 degree positive.

Toe-in, toe-out for mazda bravo 2600,1997 model, dual cab

This must be set on an alignment machine you just can't move the front wheel to what you think is correct, it must be right on. They toe in slightly on most vehicles

What should the front wheel alignment be on an E34 5 series BMW Touring

The only thing you should have to worry about is a full tank of gas and four good tires. The alignment machine (usually a HUNTER) does it all.
