Question about Kenmore Dryers

1 Answer

I have a Kenmore electric dryer that suddenly went ''poof'' (like when a light bulb that goes out). It threw the breaker. I reset the breaker and the dryer started. I thought that was all there was to it, but now it won't heat the air. I checked continuity of the fuse, both thermostats, and the heating element. All checked out. I did not check the continuity with the wires disconnected, but got no continuity in the temp switch, so I replaced it to no avail. (still no heat) I read in the repair manual to disconnect the wires from the posts to check each component. The thermostat that has 4 wires checked out on two of the terminals, but not the two others. I then replaced it and still no heat... I hate to call a repair guy out at this point. Any suggestions?

Q - My electric dryer runs but will not heat, what could stop my dryer from heating?
A - Things that could stop a electric dryer from heating:
- house fuse or breaker ( needs two of them ), heating element, burnt wire, thermostat(s), thermal fuse ( not all models ), motor heat switch, timer, selector switch, burnt power cord/plug.
A ohm meter test for these parts is here.

There is a thermal overload switch that is located under the top of the dryer. It probably is bad. You can find it close or next to the drum. Bypass it and see if it comes on and if it does, then replace it. This is probably where it is since you have apparently checked out everything else.

My dryers plug shorted out and tripped the breaker. I replaced the plug and turned it all back on and it worked.....then seconds later a loud poof sound from the dryer and now nothing is working. Please...

when a plug shorts out like your has,it creates a surge of current for a moment,it could have ruined or weakened the element, motor, thermal fuse or even pierced a wire electrically and when you re-powered the circuit it blew out this weakened component, the loud poof you stated sounds like the element burned through and blew out creating an arc and the poof sound

Our dryer just suddenly stopped! We have no light and it seems no power. We checked out fuse box and everything is fine there. Does this dryer have a fuse that would cause all electricity to stop?

Hello
No .Double check your cicuit breakers. If your dryer is electric there are two breakers.Switch all the way off then all the way on to reset.
I if ok then suspect door switch .It kills everything and if stuck ,the light too.

Happy hunting

Sounds like you need to replace your electrical breaker in the main control box of the house that feeds the dryer. You should get 120volt on each leg coming into the dryer. Good Luck, I hope this helps Please rate me, Thanks

Yes its in the rear under the panel, I would look at the breakers in the electrical box first the dryer is on a circuit alone. The breaker could be thrown, it mite not look as it is just turn it off and then back to on.

Unplug the dryer.
Always remove wires to check continuity or Ohms on any part.
Remove the terminal cover where the cord connects and check all wires.
Also, check them to ground on the chassis. The only one that should read continuity is the ground wire.
After removing the wires from the heater check the heater terminals to the heat canister.
If it reads continuity it is bad.
Pay special attention to the relay on the top side of the heat canister.
