I have the same problem; however, the 'statistics' show 16587 copies (way less than 30,000) and the replace drum light is on. Changed the drum, followed the instructions to reset the counter -- drum light still on and counter still shows 16587. Any suggestions?

The second link was the helpful information. Also, to cut through all of that --

If you need to reset the counter:

1. Remove drum kit with toner

2. Make sure all print jobs are flushed otherwise whatever has been sent and not printed will come spewing out.

3. Hold down CANCEL Button until all lights flash through.

4. Slide the drum kit and toner properly into the Printer.

done.

You need to replace the photoconductor drum. For the 1720/1720DN it's dell part #TJ987, they last approximately 30,000 pages, and the printer stops at 40,000. They collect the unused toner from each print and eventually fill up. The printer has stopped printing to prevent an overflow, and possibly physical damage of the printers internal mechanisms. When you replace the drum don't forget to reset the printers counter! You can find all of this information in the manual; If you do not have it Please follow the links below to the online version.

P.S. If you ever want to check the status of printer including information on the drum, simply hold down the "continue" button untill you hear the printer start to churn , then release. This will print out a status page showing you all kinds of important printer information.

- Hope this helps

Our printer is saying it has stopped because the photoconductor kit has reached the end of its useful life.

You need to replace. It is also called the drum unit.

Photoconductor kit? Dell 1700 printer

The photoconductor kit is another word for the drum or imaging drum. All three words refer to the same part.

Here is a link from the Dell site for this model.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/PopupProductDetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=dhs&sku=310-5404

Once you replace the drum, the printer has to be manually reset. If this is not done, the printer will continue to give this print out. By resetting it, the counter is set back to zero. The drum is good for around 30k prints.

From the Online Manual for the 1700, to reset the counter:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/1700n/en/index.htm#online_documentation

To reset the counter, press and hold the Cancel button until all lights flash in sequence.

NOTICE: Resetting the imaging drum's counter without replacing the imaging drum may damage your printer and void your warranty.

I change the ink cartage and get the message "the printer has stopped because the photoconductor kit has reached the end of its useful life" what does that mean

The Drum which is a separate part has reached it's end of life. WHen you pull out the toner cart, you press a little button that separates it from the drum. that drum also comes out. You can tell it's the drum becuase of the green roller. You can go to support.dell.com for info on removing the drum if you don't have the manual.

*Note* When you replace the drum, there is a procedure for resetting the drum count. The printer doesn't actually know you replaced the drum. You basically have to tell it. Now this trick will get the printer working right now with the old drum. However, you still need to get it replaced.

THis link will tell you how to replace the drum and reset the count. The directions are for the 1720, however, it will work for the 1710 as well.

Dell 1720 flashinf replace drum- error.

I believe this message is occur because the laser printer drum needs to be replaced, not the toner cartridge.

These are two different things. The part is a DELL 310-8710 Drum Unit. Just google DELL 1720N drum and you should be able to find one.

Is my Dell 1700 Laser Printer photoconductor drum truly fried?

The drum collects used toner for apprx. 30,000 pages. After that, the printer recommends that it be changed to prevent used toner from spilling internally into the printer's mechanisms. The whole photoconducter/drum can be replaced. The new part from Dell is apprx. $50.00 US.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Printer_Accessories/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=310-8710#Overview

You might have reset the "counter" for the photoconducter. Ever  have a water  fillter with an electronic timer? You replace the filter, then you reset the timer? Perhaps you reset the timer without actually replacing the filter. So to speak. :)
The question you should ask yourself is: would I like to spend $30 - $60 [it's cheaper for refurbished parts- Google it] replacing the drum head on a 7 year old printer, or would I rather invest that in a new printer?

Dell 1700 laser printer has Low toner and error lights flashing

Leave the printer on. Open the front and hold down the cancel button until all the lights are flashing in sequence. Close the front while still holding the cancel with the lights flashing and then release the cancel button. This should reset it.

Thanks
