Check the agitator by turning it back and forth. It should work like a ratchet (turns one way, locks the other way).If you're able to turn it in both directions, the agitator dogs are worn and need to be replaced. To do this remove the agitator cap and the bolt that holds down the agitator. With the bolt out you can remove the top section of the agitator (auger) where you should see 4 small white or beige plastic gears (dogs). Replace those and it should be ok.

Washing machine lint trap

There is no trap per say. The lint catcher is self cleaning when the water is pumped out. It sounds like you are overloading it and the clothes are hitting the agitator. Operation should be agitation by water movement not beat by the plastic fins, run a wash cycle hot water no clothes to flush things out and try smaller loads.

Pull the agitator off and check the plastic drive hub at the top of the agitator shaft. It should not be split, or have it's internal splines sheared off. If this all looks ok, then likely transmission problems or a slipping drive belt (motor to transmission). Good luck!

My agitator on my whirlpool washer doesn't work properly and that keeps the clothes from getting clean. it seems as something is loose, the bottom part works somewhat but the upper of the agitator's not...

The top portion of the agitator is designed to go in only one direction. The purpose is to keep the clothes moving from top to bottom of the basket. When this "ratchet" action fails to occur, it's due to worn "agitator dogs" (part # 80040) usually caused from overloading. It can be a do it yourself repair, or a very inexpensive service call if a professional is used.

Smoking washer Amana NAV8800AWW

Ok, that's a different scenario. Generally, when a washer is agitating and develops an overload that stalls or overheats the motor, the problem could be caused by:
1. Too many clothes for the amount of water level selected. If clothes don't have enough water to circulate in properly, it can put excess pressure on the agitator which transfers to the gearcase, drive belt, and finally the motor. The motor is thermally protected and stops running until it cools down, then it will try to restart. In the process the drive belt could burn slightly to completely,so you may want to inspect the drive belt for burned areas.
2. Transmission malfunction, where something inside the transmission breaks due to an overload and jams a gear. End results can be the same as above.
I suspect a clothes overload may have caused the problem and once the overload is alleviated, the washer should operate normlly if the belt didn't burn,
