I use a Nokia N72 - 5 mobile and have set up my mailbox to connect to Gmail and download e-mails. Download options on the mobile are :All, unread, selected. (Selected means those marked from the downloaded message headers on the mobile) All archived mails of Gmail are part of the inbox. If one chooses (erroneously) to download all mail, every one of the historical mail will start getting downloaded to the mobile(maybe only the headers - but even those are too many). The headers thus transferred to the mobile cannot be deleted unless the mail is removed from the inbox of the Gmail server and a reconnect made to mobile. This calls for deleting all the mail in Gmail!!
So can you have at least separate inbox and archived folders, so that mobile only looks at the inbox and does not get jammed. I am sure you may find a better solution. But a solution is must.
