That black piece is the spinner that cannot be repaired it is the seperate part and will be available at the local mixer repair center near to $5 just get that part and get it fixed it will work properly after that.if you yourself do not want to do take it to the repair center they will hardly charge any dollars if you buy that part from them.

My mixer wont stay turned off it springs back to number 1 speed so i have to turn off via plug socket

Shelly, usually this can be repaired without needing ANY parts! Its pretty simple but you do have to tear apart the mixer. Here is a link to the service manual: http://ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf

99% of the time you are dealing with a loose screw. So take the mixer apart, once you have done that you will find the speed control lever with knob has a screw that holds it in place and in contact with the spring. That screw can work loose and if not all the way tightened will allow your mixer to pop back into speed one. Simply tighten the screw and see if the mixer will operate correctly.

If the speed lever is working through all 10 speeds correctly re-assemble the mixer. If it does not correct the problem you will want to buy the speed control lever kit.

This will include a new speed control lever with knob, the spring, link and a gearbox gasket.

The part number you will be looking for is 4176230, it is only about $7 plus shipping of $3.25.

The gears will not work. It will not turn on

There are three springs which can be seen when the back cover is removed. Two are behind the black control plate (the pair of screws at the top of the plate are tensioned by these screws) and another spring that pulls on the bottom of the control plate (this one comes from deep inside the motor housing).

The following link will take you to a copy of the KitchenAid Service Manual which will help you identify the springs and, I hope, the problem.

Why wont my classic kitchenaid mixer switch off

Good Morning,

There is a spring inside your mixer attached to the speed control switch and speed control arm, the spring can sometimes get caught on the slide bar that is just below it inside the mixer. The other reason is that the speed control switch plate in the rear of the machine (that the spring attaches to) vibrates the three speed adjustment screws out or in and the spring will pull the speed switch (control arm that you use to control mixing speed when using the mixer) back to the stir position after you try to turn the mixer off.

If it is a spring problem you will have to do a full tear down to get at the spring and either free it or replace it. If it is a problem with the adjustment screws on the speed plate, that can be handled at the rear of the machine and is twice as easy to get at but sometimes much more frustrating to adjust. There are "YouTube" videos on the internet that will walk you through the process of adjusting your speed control plate just Google "adjusting speed on kitchenaid mixer" I hope this helps. please let us know if it does and if you have other questions just post them here and we will "FixYa"

KITCHENAID MIXER WON'T TURN ON ?

Remove the brush caps on the sides of the motor housing and check the carbon brushes. If they are worn out replace them. They are keyed and will only fit properly one way so be observant. If that's not the problem remove the back cover and check for broken wires on the black control plate. Make sure the switch on the bottom inside of the control plate is making contact. If still faulty check the cable for continuity to the control plate, cable connects to the black wire and the white wire on lower left of control plate. After that you need to check for continuity of the field coil windings. Only thing left after that would be the phase board pcb just above black speed control plate at the back.

Knob for kitchaid stand mixer

I am assuming you mean the little black knob on the speed control has broken off. I will post the solution for that problem.
The speed control lever on KitchenAid mixers has a little black knob on the end (in some cases this may be white or gray). The knob is pressed onto the lever, so if the knob breaks off your only option is to replace the whole lever.
KitchenAid has a kit that will include all you need to replace the speed control lever. It even comes with instructions. Here is a link to the speed control lever kit on our website: http://www.mendingshed.com/kaleverkit.html

The lever kit includes the speed control lever (with knob), speed link, spring, instructions and a gearbox gasket.

The instructions will only walk you through how to hook up the speed control lever, so if you also need a little guidance in taking the mixer apart, and reassembling it please use the KitchenAid service manual. The manual will walk you through all of the repairs you may need on your mixer, including how to take the mixer apart and put it back together. How to take the motor out of the k45ss? This is an older cream colored one.

rather than doing a motor tear down to take out the brush holders, try this. first turn the mixer on it's side. (Use a folded towel to avoid breaking the knob from either the lock or speed control) then tap the machine to see if it will dis lodge.if not a very small drill bit drilled into the stuck brush will usually work. drill a little way in and stop the drill, now pull out and the brush should come out with the drill bit. You may ahve to do it once or twice to get the brush out but it works for me the couple times I had stuck brushes. Dont push the drill hard let the bit do the work. Let us know if this helps.

Mixer motor quit.

I think that the motor is still fine. Get a Copy of the Repair Part List from Kitchenaid.com.
First thing I would do is to check the two Motor Brushes (one on each
side of the Motor Housing). Make sure they are not worn out, and when
inserted, they must both make contact with the Motor Coils. If even
one of them is not in contact with the coils, the motor will not run.
You can also remove the Motor Housing and visually verify that they
are touching the Coils.

You may have to remove the Motor Housing and use a small screwdiver
to completely remove the brushes or all portions of them if they are broken.

I took the side screw out now it won't turn on.

The brushes aren't contacting the commutator on the motor. Remove both screws, insert a small phillips screwdriver into the exposed springs and simply push down until you feel resistance. That should fix it.
Good luck!

My Kitchenaid mixer is tripping the power in my house. I removed the back and found two identical springs loose in the machine. Have you seen this problem before? Cheers Anthony.

Anthony,

Based on your description, it sounds like those identical springs are a part of your motor brushes. Normally, they would be attached to the motor brushes (depending on model), which are located behind the 2 slotted round access caps about mid way, front-back on the cover assy. My hunch is that the spring(s) may have gotten dislodged during a previous dis-reassembly and had came in contact with the armature and a grounded component causing a short and circuit overload ( breaker trip). I suggest that you locate the appropriate diagram for your mixer and ensure that your brushes are assembled correctly - all parts accounted for. You can get diagrams and parts lists from various online vendors, such as: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/modelsearch.aspx?model=k45ss Use the 'Motor and Control' diagram as a reference.

Good luck!
