GE side by side - upper freezer warming once a week then freezing

Refrigerator
Model PSC25MSSA SS
year - 2006

Could it be a stuck defrost cycle? If so, is there a simple switch replacement that could fix this?

Once a week fridge seems to go into auto defrost? all temp readings go blank and both fridge and freezer warm up. Book says there's a heater for 'quick thaw' in lowest drawer. Is heater malfunctioning?

Had the same problem. Bottom of freezer was about the right temp but the upper part was way too warm. Fridge side was fine. Ice maker stopped making ice - it wasn't broken, but it won't run through its cycle if the temp is too high. Cubes already in storage hopper melted and water refroze as it ran to lower, colder part of fridge. Problem: Fan controller for freezer compartment was faulty. The fan itself was fine. Fix: GE replaced the main circuit board that controls everything on this model, including the freezer compartment fan. Once that was done, temp returned to normal, ice maker is happy again. The board had undergone several revisions from the factory installed one (could tell this by comparing the part number on the old and new boards - they increment it when they revise it.) Bad news: the part/labor were expensive and of course failed after the warranty ran out. Good news: the board is now guaranteed for 5 yrs. (Why wouldn't the factory-installed board ALSO be good for five years instead of just one? It's not like the replacement boards are made better.) Labor is covered only for 90 days though so it won't be free if they have to come back after that.

Why is ice building uo in the draining hole on my ge side by side refrigator freezer part model no GSH25JSTA SS

Some refrigerators are just prone to water freezing in the drain opening. Some are caused by the refrigerator not being properly leveled and the water begins to freeze as a pool of condensate on one side until it reaches the opening it freezes over. Most are cause by gunk that accumalates in the turns as the water drain down to the tray below the refrigerator and about the only way to clear it out is to force a soft cord down through the drain line until it reaches the pan below the refrigerator. More on this page=> Leaking Refrigerators! In some extreem cases you can make a heater for the drain opening by twisting copper wire around the defrost heater element and place the other end of the copper wire into the entrance of the defrost drain opening. The heat from the defrost heater will follow the copper wire to the opening and warm the area during each defrost cycle. In most cases the gunk is somewhere in the drain line and once you clear that out you should not have the same problem for a long time. I am here if you have questions Thanks Sea Breeze

There are three parts to the defrost system You've taken care of the heater do now check defrost thermostat>http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the Motherboard.

Freezer will not defrost on its own GSL25JFPE

Most likely, the defrost system has failed. There are three components: a defrost timer, a defrost heater, and a defrost bi-metal.
I would have suggest replace your defrost heater.

Refrigerator/freezer gets warm intermittently

sounds like your thermostat is faulty
the thermostat reads the temperature of the cabinet and controls the temperature
the 1 thing to check on the uprights is the evaporator is in the freezer and that makes the cool then there is a fan that blows the air around the fridge and freezer to freeze things
now there is a cycle that hapens to cycle usualy every 12 hours and that is the defrost cycle
this cycle turns off the compressor and fan turns on an defrost element on the evaporator and heats up the coils to get rid of the ice
the ice turns to water and runs through a drain to a evaporator tray and when the cycle is finished the fridge stars up again and goes into the cooling state again
when the thermostat decides that the fridge is cold enough it turns of the compressor and so on it goes through the cycles as required
if the drai is blocked or the defrost system is not working the evaporator will get choked with ice and the fan will not beable to let air through to cool things off
