If you reboot the machine does it come back up to the desktop? are you just wanting to know how to turn off standby by mode? Sorry for the questions, but this is all I see... "

Computer is on but in constant standby mode and..."Just need some more info.

Have you tried actually unplugging the power cord from the back of the machine. if there is a light on the back of the power supply let it go all the way out. Then plug it in and turn it back on.

your best option is to remove the powercord from the back of the computer and wait a minute before plugging it back in and turning on your system this will delete the "standby mode save" and turn on your PC normally

WHAT HD & SIZE RECOMMENDED FOR MY GATEWAY 500S PC WITH OS XP?

You cannot use a SATA (serial ATA HDD in this machine. You need a PATA (parallel ATA) HDD, also known as IDE, ULTRA IDE, ULTRA ATA. This has a 40-pin ribbon connector & a 4-pin power connector.
Sizes generally available would be 80GB up to 250GB, although very few PATA drives are now sold since SATA is the new standard.

If you have a separate vid card / reseat it as pushing in ram can dislodge it.

My Gateway 500s monitor is stuck in power save mode

Try tapping the F8 key while booting the computer, you will get the start up menu, choose safe mode, when you log on, go to the display settings, that is right click on the desktop, properties, screen saver, advanced and make sure that hibernation is off, along with turn off disks or whatever , probably see turn off monitor after XX minutes, I make ours 15 minutes (150 computers and servers), I don't let the disks turn off. Choose always on also, not home/office. Try this and see if these settings help.
