This machine is fairly easy to repair because it does not need to be moved to access the innards. The consloe flips up and exposes clips which hold the skin to the base. The case comes off this washer.
HERE is some pics with directions.

Machine will agitate until lid is open? will not spin unless I play with the lid...i can see the motor start to turn then it cuts off...after some playing with the lid I can get it to spin?

The lid has to be closed for agitate and spin. The lid switch is loose or defective.
Open the control console to retrieve the mini service manual.
Follow the steps to access the lid switch and repair.

Washer will not agitate or spin

Worn agitator dogs have NOTHING to do with the washer's ability to spin. Spin and agitation is controlled by the drive motor and gearcase (transmission). The washer will still spin and agitate with worn dogs on the cam assembly, but the agitiator will slip or remain stationary. This configuration usually applies only to Whirlpool manufactured washers (includes Kenmore, Estate, Roper, Kelvinator, Kitchenaid and some later model Maytags).

The most common cause of the symptoms you describe is a lid switch malfunction.

The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

On some models, the lid switch is located under the top casing by one of the lid hinges. You will know if you if you have this type of switch, because It does not have a lid strike and the small hole on the right hand side of the wash tub will not be present. This switch is actuated (toggled) by a rod on the lid hinge. With this type of switch, if you locate it and it can be toggled by hand, you may only need to adjust the actuator by bending it slightly.

A replacement lid switch (if required) can be purchased at any of the following web sites:

The average price is about $20 - $30. Prices differ between sites so shop and compare.

If you have questions, need additional assistance, please post back with your model number (located on a nameplate along the wash tub opening under the washer lid), so I can provide you with better assistance. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: The problem could also be attributed to a a worn gearcase, but you need to rule out the least expensive and more comon problems first.

Drum fills with water but won't agitate. spins and rinses fine.

If it does not agitate check the variable speed motor, the control unit and the transmission.

Check also the lid switch. A defective lid switch may open the circuit and stop the cycle before agitating.

Washing machine stops mid-cycle, water doesn't drain

Sounds like you have a bad lid switch, or the plastic plunger on the lid that engages the lid switch is broke. if the plunger is broke, it is cheap, and only 2 screws to remove and put new one on. if that is not broke, check the lid switch. This model is a lid switch, and lid lock in one. You can test it before replacing it if you have a meter. you need to hinge the lid up to check and replace the lid switch. use a putty knife, on each side between the top and top of the front panel. slide the putty knife in one side, it will hit a bracket if your in the right spot. press in, and lift on that side of the top. do the same on other side, just don't let go of the first side or it will latch again. then swing the top back, the back side is on hinges. the lid switch is on the right side attached to the top. unplug washer, remove the 2 wires on the switch and check continuity. there should be continuity, or "open" when the lid is closed, and no continuity, or "closed" when you open the lid. if it is "closed" even when lid is closed, replace the lid switch. let me know if you have any further questions, shane.

Maytag top loading washer will not agitate

My rule of thumb: Take what you paid for the washer new and divide by number of years without repairs. That is your cost per year for the washer. If the repair will get you another year and is less than the number above do the repair. If you have done more than 2 major repairs in a year it is time to think new. eric

Agitates but no spinning or draining

Check the lid switch for continuity.
Open the control panel, disconnect the lid switch from the top of the cabinet.
Use a volt/ohm meter set for continuity. Insert the probes into the connector attached to the cabinet. With the lid closed it should get a reading. If no reading replace the switch.
While it is open you can make a jumper wire and jump out the lid switch wire going to the timer. Then turn the dial to spin and turn it on. If it spins it verifies a bad lid switch. If not, you have a bad timer.

check your lid switch, it can be bypassed until you can get a new one. Just be aware that the machine will agitate and spin with the lid up. To open the top use a putty knife or butter knife at the joint of the top and bottom at the front corners to push the catch in while lifting the top. On an older machine the lid switch goes bad, another thing is the rubber drive part between the motor and the transmission, but the machine probably wouldn't agitate either.
