Paddle won't turn

I think the paddle is frozen in my oster 5834 bread machine, the bottom plate turns back and forth, but the paddle in the bowl won't move. What do I do? tksThe rubber belt turns the bottom assembly, but the "paddle" can be stopped from turning with a minimum amount of resistance. As a result, the dough does not mix and does not knead etc. It seems as though the nut on the bottom of the belt pulley is loose. I am going to try to tighten it. Any other ideas? Could the rubber belt be stretched from wear?

Thanks. I took it apart and tightened the nut. It appears to be spinning the paddle, but who knows for how long. I think I have had the machine for approximately 8-10 years, so probably time for a replacement if this does not work.

How long have you owned the machine? It is definitely possible that a component is wore past its usefulness. I would try to repair it yourself, and if not I would not invest any money repairing as it would be a much wiser option to replace the unit if it is defective. If you need further assistance let me know. also please take a moment to rate my solution accordingly.
Thank you,

You need to disassemble the machine to fix the problem, that is probabluy a broken gear.

The paddle is mounted on a gear with a rubber gasket, when the gasket is worn the pad will not have enough friction and strenght.

The bread maker must be disassembled and the faulty part replaced.

The parts and the disassembly diagrams can be obtained contacting Oster® Appliances.

If you give them a call they will aso give you precise indication on part number, Contact them here.

I need a manual for my oster breadmaker model 5834

I maintain a database of bread machine manuals. I have checked my files and I do have an electronic copy of your bread machine manual. I charge a small fee for the work that goes into finding, scanning, creating, maintaining and providing them. If you are interested email me at

daryl441@msn.com

Be sure to show the maker and model # of your bread machine in the email so I know which one to send. I get many requests and I need to know which machine manual you need.

Thanks, and Happy Baking!

The machine gets warm but the paddle doesn't turn.

Hi, The paddle should turn freely by hand with the bread pan out of the machine. Make sure the pan is inserted in the machine correctly. If the motor shaft turns but the paddle doesn't then the sealed bearing that the paddle rotates on has failed and is frozen so the paddle does not turn.. You may need a new bread pan. Hank

Oster 5834 bread pan failure. Spindle that turns the paddle fell

There is no kit to fix it. Check out ebay or Amazon for a new bread pan. When my bread pan broke it was too expensive to replace, so I just bought a new Sunbeam at Walmart for under $50.00. Hank

The axis in the bottom of the pan, which holds the paddle, won't turn. The axis in bottom of the machine does seem to rotate when I try it without the pan. Is there a way to fix the pan?

Hi,
Try putting warm water in the pan and let it soak. Try it a few times. If you can't turn the paddle by hand, then the sealed bearing that turns the paddle is frozen and can't be repaired. Sorry Hank

Oster 5834 not mixing ingredients well before rising & baking

Hi,
Take the bread pan and paddle out of the machine and see if you can spin the paddle by hand. If it moves freely, then it could be the belt is loose on the pulley inside the base of the machine, or the pulley or motor itself is not right. Either check the belt or exchange it at the store or check warranty. It is obviously a defect. Good Luck, Hank

Is the shaft that the paddle attaches to supposed to easily drop out of the bottom of the bread pan, or is there a gasket of some type that is supposed to hold it in?

Hi,
It is not supposed to fall out. The sealed bearing is broken causing the shaft to slip out. You have to replace the pan.

Paddle won't turn

Although my Oster breadmaker is older (5811) it had the same problem (frozen paddle) and I just fixed it today. First read this article on maintenance: http://www.breadmachinedigest.com/tips/bread-machine-maintenance.php, then watch this video on disassembling a breadmaker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReTBIc3qTT0. The good news is the bottom comes more easily than the video and the workings are easier. If your belt is fine (which mine was since Oster is grooved differently than the video) then First turn the big wheel by hand a few times to "unlock" it's stiffness. Then remove the big wheel and belt. Oil both of the spindles with MACHINE OIL ONLY (like the first article emphasizes)--I used sewing machine oil. Mind you, I did this with my machine upside down to be sure oil ran down the shafts. Then re-assemble. This was a BBBBitch to do until I discovered the spindle on the big wheel is shaped like an elongated D. Once you figure that out, it will drop down easily. I stretched the tight belt back on by fitting it first into the smaller paddle end (to be sure the grooves are in place) then putting it around the big wheel, holding loose part with thumb and turning the wheel until it fell into place--sort of like a tire machine. (see attached picture) Now give it a few more spins by hand (it should spin freely) and replace bottom of machine. Voila. Mine is working perfectly now, and I hope yours will too.
