I have lost my instruction book and presumably because I am in the UK, the brochure request form will not work for me.

Right, now I've figured this out :)

Put your button in the holder on the foot - fiddle about with it enough and I'm sure you'll work out how, one bit slides open and then you can close it again to hold the button.

Then fit the foot to the machine - the piece with the button in goes at the back.

Select 2 on the stitch selector, 4.5 on the stitch width and buttonhole on the stitch length.

Using scraps make up a piece of fabric with the same number and construction of layers as your finished garment and do a practice run or three.

You can set the actual feed length using the -.+ control (beside the feed release switch at the front, below the sewing table).

Between button holes you need to reset by turning the stitch selector wheel slightly until you hear a click.

Once you're happy with the method, think you have the settings as you want them and feel you have done enough practice try it for real on the garment.

Note: the button holes come out a bit long - just don't cut down the whole length or you may need to hand sew them tighter.

I realise I have left out a very important step in my previous posting.

Once the foot is fitted to the machine you need to pull down the button hole bar which is the bit that makes the button holer stop when it has got to the required length, do the long stitches at the far end and then work back up the other side. It is a metal bar with a plastic tab on the end embossed with a button hole symbol and pulls straight down on the left-hand side of the foot from inside the machine above the needle holder.

I found the left side of my button holes was closer stitched than the right so I did the left side with the adjuster on the . [dot] and switched it to - for the return side.

does it sew buttonholes both ways?

My Janome 6500 always buttonholes away from me, so when it starts, it sews the near bartack, then stitches backwards down the right hand side of the buttonhole. It then comes back with little straight stiches on other side and sews the zigzag backwards on the left side, then the far bar tack. I would have thought your Janome would do the same stitch sequence.

just copy the link into your browser bar if it doesn't take you there automatically.

usually there is a little lever you pull down on the left of the pressure foot which triggers against the buttonholing foot to get the right length buttonhole.

Can't figure out automatic buttonhole use on MC4000

2 things must do:
You have to use the buttonhole foot.
You have to pull down the lever to the lowest position (just left of needle bar/ presser bar up in machine.)
Set to buttonhole. After each buttonhole, be sure to change off the buttonhole then reset to buttonhole to reset the buttonhole to the beginning

Buttonhole jams - 'bl' what do I do?

Hi,
Have just had the same thing. Found out that the BL stands for Buttonhole Lever. On pg 22 of your manual you will see at step 3 that you need to pull down the buttonhole lever as far as you can before attempting to sew. On your machine it is a black lever tucked up under near the needle. Hope this helps. Cheers
