Sounds like the compressor is going out even if it runs will cause cooling problem. new compressor costs around 350 dollars. better just to purchase a new fridge as it would cost more to repair.

hope this helped
please rate well

This can be a few things one being if your refrig needs a freon charge. The other could be the thermostat is not reading the temp properly and needs to be replaced.

It's not coolIf the refrigerator isn't cool, you need to answer some questions, then see if the compressor is running.

First, answer these questions:

  • Is the refrigerator completely dead? If so, see “It's stopped completely.”

  • Is the thermostat knob turned to the proper setting? If not, reset it.

Next, see if the compressor motor is running

The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of several different components, we recommend contacting a qualified appliance repair technician for further help.

If the compressor is not running but you do have power to the refrigerator, there may be a problem with one or more of these:

  • The compressor

  • The Thermostat

  • The overload, relay, or capacitor

  • The defrost timer

  • The condenser fan motor

Side by side refrig/freezer not cooling

    Hi,

if the compressor is running your ref. should be getting cold. Their is a defrost timer but when it is in defrost the compressor shuts off. I think you do have a leak.

    thanks,

My side by side whirlpool ref. doese not cool or freeze even though the motor continues to run.

If it is not cooling in either freezer or fridge and the compressor is running you are more than likely short of refrigerant which has leaked out. The leak needs to be repaired and the fridge recharged. If there is slight cooling you should make sure that the fans are operating and that you have airflow.

Freezer compartment of refrigerator not freezing

First, I think it’s important to know that the Ref side has no cooling coils, it’s basically a box and the cold air in the freezer is blown over by a fan through a channel into the Ref side. This channel has a door which regulates how much cold air goes through. You probably have two control knobs in the Ref side, one controls the temp with numbers 1-9, 9 being the coldest. This temp control tells the compressor how long to run. The other control is for that little door and it may have letters A-E, E being the coldest. If you set it on E (coldest) then this will close that little door and keep most the cold air in the freezer.
So, how can the Ref side be cold and the freezer side not freezing?

    1. Coolant leak. There is enough coolant to keep the Ref side cool but not enough to freeze on the freezer side.

    2. Defrost system failure. The coils on the freezer side are clogged with ice and it's just a matter of time when the Ref side won't cool either. The back wall in the freezer will be covered with ice/frost

    Side by side not working

Make sure the compressor is running and not just a fan motor.

Unplug the ref for 30 min or so and while you are behind the ref plug it back in, listen for the compressor to start. If you hear a clicking noise and the compressor never starts then replace the relay on the compressor. If the compressor runs and still does not cool then you may have a coolant problem.

Take the back out of the freezer and check and see if the refrigerator is in defrost while it is cooling if it is replace the timmer, then check and see if the fan on the underside is working if not replace the motor this will cause the problem also.
If all that is ok feel the small line under the refrigerator ( high side) and see if it is hot while it is running if not check the freon in the refrigerator.

It sounds as if you have a defective compressor start relay.  It is located on the side of the compressor, usually contained within a black plastic housing (box).  If ordered, it will most likely come with an overload proctector.  Change both parts.
