Hi there. Try this:
Remove the batteries and any card you may be using. Leave them out for 5 minutes and replace them and the card, then turn the camera on. This should work.

I have been able to upload photos before from my nikon, but when I plug it in, the program doesn't launch.

1) Make sure the camera is turned on and pluged in correctly via the provided USB cable.
2) If it is and the Nikon software still doesn't launch, you have 3 options:
a) Look up for the program in your start up folder to launch it manually.
b) Go to "My Computer" and select the camera. This will open a folder where you can view the pictures and copy/cut them to another folder.
c) Unplug the camera and turn it off, and take out the SD card. Then plug it into the SD port in your computer*. If while pushing the card into the slot you feel a spring pushing it out, keep pushing until you feel a click. For taking it out, push it again.
*This step requires your computer to have the slot, if it is relatively new, it will.

The old used battery was probably not used for a long time and in time, completely discharged and died. It can't be brought back. I don't know why your camera won't turn on with the original battery.

It's supposed to say that. When you plug it in, it says that, then once you are done uploading the photos and you eject the USB chord, those words will go away and you just turn off your camera and then turn it back on to take more photos.
