I have a hp compaq prasario cq40 laptop i spilled just a drop of liquid on the key board it stayed on for 10 to 15 min and then shut off the problem is it turns on however the screen will not and if i...

There is no way to know the extent of the damaged done to your laptop. I can only guess that the following parts could be bad, motherboard, battery, optical drive, keyboard, etc, etc...in addition laptops are a pain when it comes to dis-assembly

The rules if you spill a liquid on your laptop
  1. DO NOT apply POWER
  2. Remove the power adapter and battery as quickly as possible
  3. Blot up as much liquid as possible
  4. Remove all drives and allow the rest of the liquid to drain
  5. Use a hair dryer on low heat to assist in the drying process
Please note that soda leaves a sticky residue that can cause more problems, more disassemby of the laptop might be required

Hardware problems, most likely caused by overheating processor ; Install this program and monitor your pc - if something is wrong you will see it and know what to fix

My computer shuts down after a few minutes

2 possible issues come to mind: 1) the computer is getting hot (CPU, memory or video card), 2) the power supply can't keep up with the demand.

Try using a program that lets your track your computer's internal temperature. System Information for Windows, http://www.gtopala.com/ , is the one I use. Depending on the cause, you may need to increase the ventilation of your case (add fans - slot cooler by the video card, front, back or side panel.). If the CPU is getting hot, make sure that the CPU cooler is working and consider removing it and reapplying a new layer of thermal paste before reattaching the cooler.

If the problem is the power supply, check the specs on your devices (memory, CPU, video card) and the power supply load rating. You may need to upgrade the power supply.

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(I am not a gamer but the default power supply that came with my computer didn't have enough power for the added memory and video card. I replaced that and added a back fan (spot available), a slot cooler, a drive bay fan and cut a hole to add a side panel fan.)

661fx-m7, It is running ok for 6-10 minutes then pc shuts down with no warning. this can be when it is active or just sitting idle. any ideas please?

This is generally an indication of a processor error. It may be running too hot and stops working when it overheats.

After 15 -20 min my monitor goes blank

This could indicate a problem with the graphics card. Take the card out and clean it, then clean the slot that it fits into. (I normally use a small dry paintbrush).

Replace the card, making sure that you push it down gently but firmly and ensure that the plastic clip has gone back correctly that hold the card in place. Rescrew the card back to the casing correctly and reboot.

Hopefully this will resolve your problem. If it does not, to determine whether or not your graphics card is faulty. Change the monitor lead over to the onboard graphics port instead of the agp/pci port and reboot. If the monitor works properly with no problems, then you have a bad graphics card.

I hope this helps.

Boots up for ~15 sec. then shuts down

Usually a motherboard will shut the system down to save itself. So check that the fans are spinning and that the heatsink is properly seated. You should also test in a minimum configuration be removing all add in cards, disconnecting all drives and unnecessary cables, and removing all but one memory module. If this doesn't point out the faulty components then either the motherboard (most likely) or CPU (less likely) is faulty.
