You might have had un-ticked the option when you installed Yahoo Messenger and that's the reason why the shortcut is missing on desktop. To put an Yahoo Messenger icon on your desktop you can go Start, Programs and Yahoo Messenger folder. Right click on the smiley application and select send to and then Desktop (create shortcut).
restart your pc and try again........if you are using messenger 9.0 then click on <messenger> before sign in then click on <connections and preferences> and mark there an option <use no proxy> i hope that will be solved. if this does not work then wait for sometime and then retry, this also happens if u shutdown messenger without logging out.

Also, you may have a software problem Close all programs when uninstalling, downloading and uploading. After uninstalling from the Control Panel back this up with a visit to your 'C' drive to ensure the 'Messenger' program is fully deleted. Start > Computer >> Local disk (C) >> Programs files >> Yahoo >> Messenger. With Vista, the Messenger folder should be fully deleted, all too often software gets left behind creating conflicts. If it is still visible, delete it manually before moving on. Download ccleaner and run it through until your browser is clean.
