Hi, My Toshiba laptop has stopped playing CDs or DVDs. Is the internal CD/DVD drive replaceable?

Hello rach_94783, and Welcome to FixYa!

Before thinking of replacing the drive, I would recommend that you go and visit this site from Microsoft's support page :

MS Drive Fix

This was designed primarily to resolve any conflicts in your Window's registry in order to fix optical drive issues. Click on "Run Now" to download the repair application :

After the download is completed, make sure that you close all running programs before initializing the application. After the procedure, restart your computer.

If this does not resolve this problem, then yes, the optical drive needs to be replaced, and Yes, it is replaceable. Contact Toshiba's support page for more info :

I hope this helps, Thank you for using FixYa.

Driver

For DVD drives, no special driver software is required. The drives will work with generic drivers provided with all standard operating systems out of the box.

However, DVD movie playing is *not* done by a driver, it requires an application installed on the PC.

For Windows, AFAIR only Windows 7 can play DVD movies out of the box, using Windows Media Center.

All other versions of Windows require a commercial or free player program, e.g. WinDVD (Corel) or PowerDVD (Intervideo) or VLC (VideoLAN, free).

For burning data or movie DVD, also an application program is needed. Windows Vista and later have some limited support for ISO and UDF files systems written to DVDs. Personally, I like CDBurnerXP for data, and Slysoft's CloneDVD / AnyDVD combo for video.

When I want to copy a CD must I only record on a CD blank disc; i.e. not a DVD

It depends upon what type of data you want to copy onto a CD or DVD.
If you want to copy and play music in a CD player then it needs to be on a CD disc.
If you want to copy and play movie DVDs in a DVD player then it needs to be on a DVD disc.
If you want to backup data files then it can be on either CD or DVD discs (depending upon the amount of data to be stored on the disc - CD holds 700 Mb, single layer DVD holds 4.7 Gb, and dual layer DVD holds 8.5 Gb of data).
A DVD player can read both CDs and DVDs, but a CD player cannot read DVD discs.

Please Insert disk?

Hi Tool4theman, I have a CD/DVD r/w drive and it only says NEC DVD +RW. That is just the text the manufacturer has embedded in the device, not the results of any diagnostics. You've mentioned what program you are playing DVDs with but what are you playing your audio CDs with and are they commercial audio CDs? Have you tried running a diagnostic on your drive? Here is a link to the Sony CD/DVD diagnostic tool. Its meant for Sony drives but I have used this successfully on other drives in the past. When prompted for a blank disk us a CD. http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/diagnostics.htm#dwn Let us know how it goes and don't forget to rate the posting.
