Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Bottom section of refrigerator not keeping cold.

Hello, I have a older GE 20.6 cu ft (no frost freezer) model TBX21JA, refrig with ice box. The top freezer is doing it's job of keeping things frozen but the bottom is not keeping cold. I took the panel off to expose the coil
located in the freezer and there was a substanial amount of ice build up. I have thawed that out and have just put the cover back on. Do you think this will solve our problem and allow the bottom section of the refrig to work properly and if so how long should it take before we see a difference?
Thanks, Ed

My wife called a repair service and the guy came out and replaced the compressor fan motor and that seems to have fixed our problem. The inside temp is now boardering 48-50 degrees set at

5 where it was at 60 degrees. I am not sure if that is the same a

the defrost element but no doubt it has been freezing up. We'll keep an eye on it for the next couple of days and hope for the best!

    Thanks for your quick response!

    Ed

Nope it will not solve the problem. I am pretty sure your defrost element is faulty and needs replacing. This element assists the unit to melt the ice and clear the tubing and fins for better airflow which is then pushed into the fridge compartment.

Thanks for your comment. Of course the faulty condenser fanmotor would not help cooling matters, but many domestic units can run for ages with a faulty fan. The fact that you are getting ice up in the evaporator means that it is not being defrosted and you therefore do not get sufficient air circulation in the cabinet to cool properly. Let it run for a while and see. May be lucky.

Model # MFF2557HES Top refrigator section stoped cooling freezer is working

You may have Ice buildup in the freezer. You freezer has a fan in the bak that sends the cool air to the fridge. Your fridge dial determines how muh cold air comes from the freezer. Try defrosting the freezer. You may have to pull the back panel off of the inside of the freezer to get the ice thawed. The ice build up is likely causing the air to not get to the fridge. Hope it works.

Contact a professional. There is a restriction from the freezer section to the refrig section that helps make it cool.

Yes, if the fan is not forcing the cold air from the freezer section to the refrigerator section, then it will be warmer than it should be. Also check to make sure that the cooling tubes aren't blocked with frost/ice. If you put a hair dryer to the cooling tube openings you should feel the air flow on the other side.

The refrigerator stays at 47 degrees but the bottom compartments freeze

You have a defrost problem. A blockage of frost in the freezer prevents air flow over the cooling coils there, allowing very cold air to migrate back into the bottom of the refrigerator section. Unload the freezer and remove the back wall, melt the frost off the coils with a hair blower, and check to see if the defrost heater at the bottom of the coils is burnt out. If heater is OK, replace the 1.5 inch long white thermistor located at the very top of the cooling coils.

Frost buildup at back of bottom freezer department. Refrigerator should be frost free. Freezing impaired.

could be anumber of things happing, is the freezer fan spinning? if not ice will accumulate( also hamper cooling in the refrig section). perhaps a defrost issue, a bad heater or defrost thermostat could also cause, this/ may even just be the door being left open for extendedperiods of time( ie.. overnight, or hte gasket not sealing correctly) leading to a frost build up on rear panel

ED25PQDW01 side by side refrig -freezer is inconsistent. Need to have full cold to maintain freezer temp. cleaned coils, but still an issue.

Do you see a light coat of frost in freezer section about 12 inches up (defrost problem indication) ? Has the icemaker slowed down a bit in ice production ? What is the refrigerator control set on ? When you turn the freezer up completely , it cuts off the cold air flow which cools the refrig section . If refrig control is set mid way , turn it up higher , so refrig will run longer , but lower the freezer setting so some cold air will enter the refrig section . Also check to see if the freezer fan is working .

Refrigerator side not cold

if you have frost build up on rear wall of freezer section then your unit is not going through defrost. its either defrost heater, defrost thermostat (which are both located on evaporator) or defrost timer

Ok the freezer section works the refrig section think of the refrigerator as a large cooler with an inlet and outlet hole cold air is blown into the refrig from the freezer via the fan motor in the freezer the really cold air comes in the top of the refrig and drops to the bottom of the refrig then it is sucked back into the freezer thru a vent hole in the bottom of the refrigerator ..GOT IT?? Now when a unit has a defrost problem there is an ice or frost build up in the freezer on the coil (bad heater, bad bi metal, bad timer can cause this) the ice builds and builds to the point where it blocks the air flow across the coil hence the air can not get to the refrigerator section making it warmer but the freezer section will work ok .. I hope this makes sense...Hint : A sign of this is a lg frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer.
