Torrent downloaders and Port Forwarding.

Hey,
I have a pantech usb modem for verizon wireless broadband. I am trying to get a torrent program to work. I have tried a few versions but they don't seem to connect. Do I need to open a port such as with a network? I have tried. when i enter my ip address in the address bar it tells me that it can not establish a connection. I have gone to ipchicken.com which is supposed to tell you of available ports and has worked for many but after trying several times the ports given are not open. I have taken down my firewall... nothing. I have gone to portforwarding.com but the list and guides are for routers... I have a usb broadband modem. any idea what I may need to configure?
thanks so much
Bill

What model number of USB Broadband Modem are you using? What ISP do you have? I personally recommend using the software BitTornado to download torrents as in the settings you can specify what ports to use.

Hi !
Can you please try Vuze (http://www.vuze.com/Download.html). Vuze can bypass most of the ISP restrictions.
Thanks.

"Woah you already lost me" That'll happen, I'll explain things directly related to the topic, like p2p sharing, but if you don't know something, Google is your friend (as long as your smart). P2P file sharing makes is exactly what it's name suggests. One person has something, and instead of going through a middle man to download that particular something, they create more or less direct connections with the person who wants said something. This often avoids many problems with police and people trying to protect there work through copyright.

Why do it?
By now you've obviously heard of many businesses saying pirating is just stealing and since you wouldn't steal from your local supermarket, why steal from these guys? Well there's a bunch of reasons to torrent that aren't pirating. USING TORRENTS DOES NOT EQUATE TO BEING A PIRATE. This is important to note because the p2p system can be used to distribute open source software, or things that are just free by default. Pirating is only true when you download something that 1) you have never bought before and 2) is not normally free. Though this may not be true anymore, at a time, if questioned and you could provide a receipt or proof of purchase, you were able to legally download something what would otherwise have been considered pirating. However, due to pirates illegitimately obtaining forms of intellectual property, things like the DRM popped into existence, and for more information on that see http://xkcd.com/488/

What you'll need
A computer with access to the internet and a torrent client for your specific OS (Note most Linux distros have a built in torrent client). One of the most commonly used clients is uTorrent, found here: http://www.utorrent.com/ THESE ARE FREE, don't download one that asks for money. The install is standard, if you're really not sure what to do, just keep pressing next (or better yet, do a Google search!).

Access to torrents, a Google search will work fine.

Patience

Finding good torrents.
It's really not that hard to find good torrent sites. Monova and thepiratebay are very common and usually trustworthy. If you have a friend who has an account at demonoid, ask for a referral, it is the best site for torrents.

Things to look for when selecting a torrent: the number of seeders and leechers, these are other people connected to each other through that particular torrent, the higher the number the better, especially seeders, the more seeders there are, the quicker the download will be. Seeders are people who have already completely downloaded that torrent to their computer and are providing other people access to the information so as to be able to finish downloading. Leechers are the people still downloading.

The comments/reviews on said torrent. ALWAYS read what people say about that torrent in the comments, if the entire first page of comments is filled with "it's a virus" don't download it. There are viruses in torrents, just like any other download, reading what other people have to say about the torrent is a good way to get a product review.

The source of the torrent: not all torrent sites are trustworthy as some have more viruses than others. If you've never been to that site before and they don't have positive reviews, don't download from there. Another key sign is NSFW ads even on a SFW torrent (like a program that you're legally downloading).

How not to get caught and other general rules:
don't torrent porn or from sites that have NSFW ads (thepiratebay being an exception),
ThePirateBay, Monova and Demonoid are very often good sites to download torrents from,
For the love of god, seed.

If you want to make sure you won't get caught, don't do anything illegal. There is never a sure fire way to not get caught. AND WHILE I DO NOT ADVOCATE PIRATING: There are things you can do to avoid being caught if you do:
don't torrent a lot of things at once, and wait awhile in between downloading torrents.
Don't seed for an extremely long time, a week or two is perfectly fine in most cases (very subjective) however a month or two could cause problems.
Use a proxy, proxies are software that intervene in internet connections to make it seem like your IP address isn't actually yours. The tor project has a P2P torrent program out that throws your IP address all around the world. It will slow things down considerably, but that's the cost of safety sometimes.

SETTING UP A BROADBAND CONNECTION

First you need to decide what type of broadband service you require and these are -
1. DSL that uses your existing telephone line.
2. Cable that uses a cable service and can include a cable TV service.
3. A wireless USB adapter connects to a 3G network mobile/cell phone network and can be a separate or combined with your cell phone account.

Note - Any combined phone services (fixed line or wireless) with Internet connection generally offer discount pricing and may include a wireless adapter or modem/wireless router
.

If you use a wireless router with the DSL or Cable Internet service and your laptop has a wireless card then you can also connect to the Internet at WiFi hot spots like McDonalds, Star Bucks, the Airport etc.

If you use the wireless 3G wireless broadband service, then you can access the Internet anywhere where your ISP has 3G wireless coverage. You need to check the service coverage area where you need Internet service.
The advantage of using a USB wireless adapter is, you can plug it into any conputer/laptop's USB port and get Internet connection.

Once you decide what type of broadband your require, then you need to check with the various Internet Service providers to see if they can offer and thecost of the various plans.
Note the maximum download limits and the associated additional costs if you exceed the monthly download limits.

Once you sign up with a Internet Service provider, their documentation will include setting up instructions and/o rinstallation CD.

you need a torrent client for to be able to download this file ...try utorrent download-able from here ...
http://www.utorrent.com/
after installing the utorrent (it takes a few seconds) ..go to the site I linked and click on the download this torrent .(not the big button ...spam ) After that it will prompt you to open with utorrent (if you already installed it like it supposed to ..) and just confirm it ...It will take a while depending of your interned connection ...but the program works ..and I suggest not to update it cause it is not necessary ..and you may have issues to be asked for license ...
when the download is complete ...just unzip the files and click install ..if it asks for the key ..it must be in the folder ..but I think it will auto-load ..
Have a nice day ..and please do not forget to rate my assistance ..

Top Tips to increase bittorent download Speed

The latest file sharing protocol bittorrent has modified everything when it comes to file sharing. It is a nice platform for downloading large files. Sharing of files include movies, iso images and MP3 songs. Bittorent is mainly famous for illegal file sharing .
The Bittorrent system can be slow at times due to heavy traffic. so let us tweak bittorrent sharing program a little bit.
There are a lot of different bittorrent clients that you can download. I think the best are BitCommet and uTorrent. Here is a few tips to speed up uTorrent Client. Similar can be implemented on any other torrent clients ,which you are using.

Step 1: Increase TCP connections
You need to increase the number of TCP connections that are allowed at max.Windows XP Service Pack 2 came with the number of allowed open connections to 10. This is to stop any piece of spyware(in our case bittorent client even) from totally taking over your internet connection. TCP connection allowed should be 50 for optimal performance. The best way to increase the maximum number of connections is to apply patch that is available at www.lvllord.de. A nice way to fix this is to download this patch .
The little tweak to the torrent client works great in certain times. If you’re using uTorrent go to Options menu then Preferences. In the Preferences go the Advanced Options. In the advanced options change the net.max_halfopen connections to 80. In the same section change the max half open tcp connections to 80. Once your done click on OK and you are all set. This tweak will let the maximum TCP connection available for the bittorrent client. Now start downloading you’ll realize a little difference in the download speed. Port forwarding technique is more effective than this.
A third point of interest is that some “windows updates” revert your tweaked tcp connections back to 10. So it’s wise to check this every now and then. You can check this by going to (in windows xp) Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System… Look for event 4226 (sort by event).
If there are a lot of daily occurrences it’s likely that the max amount of half-open tcp connections was set back to 10. Or you’re infected with some nasty spy ware…

Step 2:Torrent Client Configuration
In order to apply these tips you must know your maximum up- and download speed. You can test your bandwidth over here (stop all download activity while testing).
Settings 1-4 can be found in the options, settings or preference tab of most torrent clients.
1. Maximum upload speed

Probably the most important setting there is. Your connection is (sort of) like a pipeline, if you use you maximum upload speed there’s not enough space left for the files you are downloading. So you have to cap your upload speed.
Use the following formula to determine your optimal upload speed…
80% of your maximum upload speed
so if your maximum upload speed is 40 kB/s, the optimal upload rate is 32kB/s But keep seeding!

What type of operating system are you using? If your operating system is too old, it won't work. Try checking the operating requirements.

How can i use utorrent?

Hi there, Follow the following instructions: 1) Go to uTorrent.com and click download the utorrent software 2) Install the program 3) Browse to a site that serves torrent files...or do a google search for .torrent files 4) then save the .torrent file to your hard drive 5) Run uTorrent and click "Add Torrent..." from the File menu. Select the .torrent file you saved in the previous step. The download file will appear in the main window. Once uTorrent has found peers that are serving the file, it will begin downloading the file to your computer

EMule TCP Port 11522 not reachable

Does you norton program have a firewall included with the software? If so, your windows firewall was probably turned off automatically because having two firewalls running simultaniosly can cause a conflict between the two firewalls and therefore will not work correctly. If you have a firewall included with your norton software make sure it is turned on and leave your windows firewall off, other wise turn your windows firewall back on.

As far as your situation with the broadband modem, I have to ask: Is your Thomson hardware a broadband router (wireless/wired), or are you using an access point? (wireless/wired) If you are using a "router" there is no way to set it up to work with the modem the cable company provided you. However, if the Thomson modem hardware is an "access point" the only thing I can suggest is to follow these steps:

1) Pull the power cord out of the back of the modem that the cable company provided to you.

2) Next, plug in your Thomson router in to the ethernet port of the computer.

3) You are then going to configure that device. Start by going to the "network and Internet" section in your control panel. There should be a section in there where you can click that says "setup a new network connection" There should be an option to set up and "access point" and it will search for your hardware. If your hardware is found you will probablybe promped to input information about your router and once that's done it should set up successfully. If it isn't successful by some chance don't give up just yet! Go to step 4-

4) Shut down your computer.

5) next, switch the ethernet cable going from your Thomson hardware to the modem from the cable company.
6) You will then need a second ethernet cable to go from a second port of the Thompson hardware in to the ethernet port on your computer.

7) next, plug the power cord back in to the modem from the cable company and your Thompson hardware and start up your computer.

You should be able to get a wired internet connection if all goes well. If you have a wireless access point go ahead and set up a separate internet connection only this time choose "wireless" and choose your settings. I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me anytime if you have more questions. Happy Holidays!
