You have to make sure that you could access Internet using the modem so could use your router again.

We have cable internet provided by Virgin. I am accessing the internet by plugging the ethernet cable dirctly into my laptop rather than via my DI524. Have just read a post that says I have to be connected...

If you can connect to the internet using the Ethernet cable on your laptop then the cable modem is configured correctly.
If you want to connect to the Internet using the D-Link wireless router then first you need to configure the D-Link wireless settings and then configure the wireless card in your laptop with the D-Link's wireless settings. Remove the Ethernet from the laptop and connect it to the WAN/Internet port on the D-Link wireless router.

Do I need any special equipment other than the ethernet cable connection for my linksys broadband wireless-g router

That's all you need to get your wireless internet up and running. However, in order to connect computers to the wireless network, they must be wireless capable, for example, most laptops have built in wifi, however desktops will need a wireless adapter to take advantage of your wireless router.

My daughter has a lynksys router wrt54g. it is connected to a cabe modem. The wireless works great, but wired compters won't connect to the internet.

Wired Connection
1. Check your hardware connection:
Make sure that you use a straight cable and not a cross over cable. And also make sure that the cable is not broken or loose.

2. Check your hardware devices:
If you are using a hub, modem, or router on your network, make sure that they are connected properly and switched on. Sometimes, the solution might be as simple as restarting the modem/router, then your computer. You can also try connecting the Ethernet cable to another port of the router to test.

3. Check your network adapter:
Disable and enable your Network Adapter to make sure that it is functioning.

4. Obtain IP address automatically:
If you have set static IP address on your computer previously, it could be one of the reasons of why you are unable to connect to the Internet. So, you should set your computer to obtain IP address automatically. If you are not sure how to do it, we have an article here to guide you.

Wireless Connection
1. Check your wireless key:
When you connect to the wireless connection, you will be prompted for wireless key (password). So, if you have entered an invalid key, you will not be able to connect to the Internet. Therefore, make sure that you have the correct wireless key. If you are not sure whether you have the correct key, ask the person who setup your wireless network for help. OR, click here to learn how to check the wireless settings on your router to find out your wireless key.

2. Repair your Internet connection:

If any more problem encounter, post or thumbs back.

How do I connect my netgear router to my desktop internet to use with my laptop. Followed instructions but when cable is disconnect from my laptop I can't connect to the internet

First Connect the Desktop with Netgear Router with the Ethernet cable. Open the Netgear GUI and configure a Wireless Network. Once its configured, switch On the WiFi switch from your Laptop and try to connect your Laptop. Make sure your laptop has an in-built Wifi adapter, if it doesn't then you would need to buy an USB based Wifi Adapter.

Also if you want to use the Internet with your Desktop PC without being connected with the Netgear Router then make sure it has Wireless connection capability.

So how is the other computer supposed to work on the internet, if this wireless router is hooked up with the current modem? If I need another part, then why did I spend $150, and not get all I needed??

Before you bought the wireless router, you probably had one computer directly hooked up to the modem (the box you got from your internet provider). The wireless router should have come with a cable similar to the one that had previously connected the modem to your computer.
When you use a router, the original cable from the modem is disconnected from the back of your computer and is instead plugged into the INPUT of your router. The cable that came with the router is then plugged in to the original computer.
So far, so good.
Now, when you want to add additional computers to the internet, you can do it in two ways: either wirelessly (which means the other computers need to have wireless capability already built in - which is the case with laptop and notebook computers, or they have to have a wireless card installed); or you have to purchase another cable (like the one that came with your router) to directly connect the other computer to the router.
The only time an additional cost would be involved is if you needed to purchase another cable (for a direct connection), or if your other computer doesn't have wireless capability.
Does that answer your question?

Belkin 54 Wireless Internet Connection Problems

Hello,

If wireless adapter on the laptop is fairly old, you may need to update the drivers for the wireless adapter. Some older wireless adapters are not capable of properly communicating with WPA devices. Typically a driver update of the laptop resolves the issue. If not, try another wifi adapter and verify it is not the OS or laptop itself.

Good Luck.

Connection drop-outs

Is your laptop wireless adapter a compatable brand. It doesn't necessarily mean the router is bad, you may even be getting RADIO interference from a cordlees or a cell phone in it's path. Do you have the capability to plug a cat-5 cable directly into your laptop from the router when you lose wireless? Check the wireless channels and see about changing the channel on your cordless phone too. May not work, just a hunch.

Good Luck

Pc connection problems

Sounds like you are setup to use Internet Connection Sharing. don't do this. Have each computer connect to the internet via the router. If the router is wireless connect all computers wirelessly to the router that are wireless capable and any computers that are not wireless capable, connect them to the router via a cat5 cable to the cat5 ports on the router. This will solve your problem. BPCS
